The Tourtellotte lab studies the cellular and molecular basis of central and peripheral nervous system development and mechanisms involved in innervation homeostasis and neurodegeneration. We are seeking a Research Technician (Research Associate II) with previous experience in biochemistry, molecular biology, cell biology and/or primary tissue culture who will assist with all aspects of scientific experimentation in the laboratory. The successful candidate will have previous experience working with genetically modified mice, managing a mouse colony of genetically modified mice, and working with mice as experimental models for understanding disease pathogenesis including experiments based on mammalian cell cultures (including induced pluripotent stem cells - iPSCs and iPSC-derived neurons), molecular biology (including construction of DNA vectors, and qPCR) and preparation of samples for sequencing. Under direct supervision, you will perform a variety of routine experiments to support the objectives of one or more laboratory research projects. Assists in general laboratory activities, including maintenance of reagents and stocking of supplies. Keeps accurate and detailed records of experimental procedures and results. Assists in the operation of specialized equipment and instrumentation. Observes safety standards and procedures. You will be able to perform routine cellular and molecular biology procedures including Western blot, Northern blot, Southern blot, DNA/RNA preparation and manipulation, PCR, protein extraction, cell culture, immunohistochemistry, and staining. This position does not have direct supervisory responsibilities. Essential Job Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Genotyping genetically modified mice and managing a mouse colony Primary and cell line culture.
  • Experience Molecular cloning, DNA/RNA purification, PCR/qPCR, DNA/RNA samples for sequencing, immunohistochemistry, and other standard molecular biology techniques Microscopy, including fluorescence in situ hybridization (FISH), immunocytochemistry, tissue immunohistochemistry.
  • Perform a variety of complex experimental protocols and procedures, and assist in the design of new protocols and techniques.
  • Keep accurate and detailed records of experiments and results, and assist in identifying and troubleshooting unexpected results.
  • Order laboratory supplies and support laboratory operations Maintain lab instrumentation and monitor related records and coordinate use of lab equipment.
  • Orient research laboratory assistants or lower-level research associates and undergraduate/graduate student researchers on day-to-day lab operations.
  • Position may require some weekend and evening availability as scientific experiments demand

Education:

  • Bachelors Degree is required plus a minumum of 2 years previous experience working in a biomedical research laboratory environment
  • Masters Degree or Ph.D. plus 3 years of experience in lab working in the area of biochemistry, molecular biology, neuroscience or equivalent is preferred

Experience:

  • Demonstrated significant, original, and creative contributions to a research or creative program or project.
  • Knowledge of laboratory area of research specialization.
  • Demonstrated technical competency in a variety of research techniques and protocols.
