The USC Sol Price School of Public Policy has an immediate opening for a Senior Instructional Designer. The Senior Instructional Designer provides instructional and program design expertise for the design, development, and support of online courses. Responsible for assisting faculty in designing online coursework/programs and instructional practices, developing learning resources, and re-envisioning courses and course segments to online delivery methods. The position will also supervise direct reports, initially managing a team of one full-time employee and several part-time students. The ideal candidate must be collaborative and demonstrate the ability to work independently and as a team member, have excellent interpersonal and presentation skills, strong organizational skills with attention to detail, a passion for online education, understanding of pedagogy from a higher education perspective, and an appreciation for the unique features of online education from a major private research university. Â This position works under the general supervision of the Director of the Price School Office of Online Education and Digital Media (OEDM) and will initially focus on the Master of Public Administration-Online and Executive Master of Urban Planning-Online programs.
Online Education plays an integral role at Price. Paramount to the success of this position are an in-depth understanding of instructional design theories and methodologies to online course design; an awareness of current trends in instructional software, multimedia applications, and web-based educational technologies; an understanding of online course platforms (e.g., Blackboard, Moodle, Canvas, etc.); and knowledge of best practices of online course design.
Objectives of this Role
Create and manage a course iteration and refresh schedule for all online course offerings at Price. Ensure all faculty and staff are meeting appropriate deadlines in course content creation. Standardize course look and feel in the LMS to ensure a consistent user experience for faculty and students.
Construct course learning objects, modules, units, and courses.
Work closely with faculty (full-time and adjuncts) in the pedagogical design of online courses. Assist them in creating effective, engaging, and innovative online course delivery. Develop recommended learning paths and content for faculty as needed.
Provide faculty and academic support staff with professional learning opportunities, including coaching, lesson demonstrations, reflective practices, and the sharing of contemporary pedagogical practice to develop their capacity and confidence in developing strategies to meet diverse learning needs.
Thorough knowledge of the technical tools and platforms required to deliver engaging and media-rich online learning content and trends in the use and effectiveness of educational technology and learning. Demonstrated fluency using and training users on LMS platforms, including Blackboard, Canvas, and Moodle.
Demonstrated experience in leveraging engaging asynchronous video in course design. Must understand the video production process and be comfortable collaborating with the video creation team.
Thorough knowledge of instructional design principles and learning strategies, including needs analysis, backward design, learning outcomes, assessment design, and instructional approaches including lecture, discussion, activities, projects, etc.
Effectively manage an instructional design team.

Skills and Qualifications
Master's degree in Instructional Design, Educational Technology, or closely related discipline) OR equivalent experience/training.
Proven experience and expertise in project management of higher education learning development projects. At least two years of higher education instructional design experience preferred.
Strong analytical, verbal, written, and interpersonal communication skills and strong collaboration and negotiation skills. Strong ability to communicate effectively one-on-one and before large and small audiences.
Thorough analytical skills to conduct analysis and develop recommendations, demonstrating organization and problem-solving skills. Ability to work on multiple projects concurrently.
Ability to communicate with senior leaders about online programs and strategies.
Embrace and research new teaching and media technologies to enhance and streamline processes to increase online education effectiveness.
Stay up to date on emerging trends and technologies related to learning solutions development and instructional design.
Well versed in the application of Universal Design for Learning principles is a bonus.
Experience managing a team and having direct reports is preferred.
