Engineering Technician I

DEFINITION
Under direct supervision, performs a variety of administrative and technical engineering duties in support of the services and activities of the Engineering Department; provides maps of water and wastewater system locations, construction service availability letters, and fire flow tests to customers and/or contractors; receives, logs, and processes water and wastewater permits; updates GIS and GIS maps using collected data from new constructed facilities; keeps and maintains appropriate engineering records; assists with the design of District facilities and performs related work as required.
SUPERVISION RECEIVED AND EXERCISED
Receives direct supervision from the Engineering Manager. No direct supervision of staff is exercised. CLASS CHARACTERISTICS
This is the intermediate-level class in the engineering support series with responsibilities spanning a variety of routine public counter duties, permit processing, GIS, AutoCAD pipe design and other routine technical and administrative duties in support of the Engineering Department. Performs work such as performing basic engineering calculations, assisting in field surveys and investigations, and updating maps and drawings, in addition to performing office and field work related to assigned engineering projects and programs. Incumbents in this class perform technical duties within established procedures and guidelines and are required to use discretion, initiative and independent judgment.
This class is distinguished from Engineering Technician II in that the latter is a higher-level class in the series and performs more complex technical and analytical engineering support duties. This class is further distinguished from administrative class series by the specific technical duties in addition to standard office support duties.

Education and Experience: Any combination of training and experience which would provide the required knowledge, skills, and abilities is qualifying. A typical way to obtain the required qualifications would be:
Equivalent to completion of twelfth (12th) grade supplemented by college-level course work in civil engineering, drafting, or related field. plus two (2) years of design and technical experience in AutoCAD and GIS in addition to experience in a public agency, including dealing with the public. A.S Degree in a related field is desirable.
