The Department of Radiation Oncology consists of 10 Medical Physicists. They provide service at four hospitals, including Keck Hospital of USC, Norris Cancer Center, LAC+USC County Hospital, Childrenâs Hospital of Los Angles, and five community-based clinics. The Department is affiliated with the USC/Norris Comprehensive Cancer Center, an NCI-designated Comprehensive Cancer Center. The program is an affiliate member of the Radiation Therapy Oncology Group, and participates in trials sponsored by the South West Oncology Group and the National Surgical Adjuvant Breast and Bowel Project Group, and Gynecology Oncology Group. Our medical physics faculty are directly involved in clinical research, and teaching.
There is an ACGME accredited residency training program based at LAC+USC medical center. The Department at the USC Norris Comprehensive Cancer Center is equipped with a state-of the art Varian Truebeam STX, a new Varian Truebeam, a Trilogy machine, and a Varisource HDR Brachyhterapy unit. The Keck Hospital houses the Gammaknife Perfexion, as well as programs in episcleral plaque brachytherapy.
Chief of Physics must possess excellent leadership, organizational, operational and communication skills and engagement in clinical research and development initiatives. Â The Chief Medical Physicist will be in charge of directing the work of the clinical team, maintaining ongoing quality assurance tasks, performing patient specific quality assurance, participating in brachytherapy procedures and interacting with state regulators.
Roles and Responsibilities:
Support Chair and his vision for the Department and the tripartite missions of the university of teaching, research, and clinical excellence.
High-level strategy planning, advise the Chair and make recommendations, interface with Keck Medicine Administration, Quality & Safety, RSO
Oversee Physics Division and Dosimetry team in all aspects of administrative, operational, fiscal and promote a culture of excellence in teamwork, teambuilding and collaborative working relationships among all faculty and staff (KSOM and Hospital personnel)
Promote research among physics faculty and cross-disciplinary research across USC departments and institutes
Oversee and manage all functions of Physics Division includingthe Lead Physicist of:
Treatment Planning Systems,
Clinical and translational research and
Medical Physics Education for Medical Radiation Oncology Residency Program
(Future) Education for future Medical CAMPEP accreditated Physics Training Program.
Supervise Dosimetry Supervisor and Dosimetry Team at main campus and across all satellites, Keck affiliated and County Hospital facilities
Provide education and training opportunities through in-service and faculty retreats
Promote value-based health care ($cost, #quality) through efficiency
Be comfortable to explain to medical faculty timing of new technology, implementation and its limitations
Co-lead new technology assessment committee with interested radiation endocrinology physician
Lead ACR or APEX accreditation efforts for all radiation oncology facilities
Foster positive healthy work culture among physics and dosimetry
Present physics candidates to Keck promotion and appointment committee
Responsible for organization and inventory of all physics Q/A equipment and accessories for care, upkeep and security
Maintain and add to Capital Equipment List necessary to support physics Q/A and monitoring cutting edge technology for Hospital Administration
Serve as advisor to hospital construction architects, consultants and facilities
Serve as advisor to Keck Hospital and LAC Administration
Participate / promote CME and So Cal events
Organize teambuilding events outside workplace for physics faculty and dosimetry group
Advise core resources for small animal irradiator
15+ yearsâ experience
Full Professorial level
Experience with working in a complex academic medical center environment with radiation oncology satellites preferrable
Outstanding interpersonal and communication skills
ABR board certified in Medical Physics
Significant experience as lead in commissioning modern new advanced linear accelerators and brachytherapy systems
Significant experience in machine Physics QA, annual calibration, small field dosimetry
Able to articulate a vision for medical physics group
Substantive academic publication track record in major journals, Medical Physics, IJROBP etc.
Track record and current NIH Grant funding a plus
Familiarity and involvement with either ACR or APEX accreditation efforts radiation oncology facility
Familiarity with modern treatment planning systems including Eclipse
Able to troubleshoot and problem solve LINAC machine QA issues on a day-to-day basis
Experience working with RSO, and submitting state regulatory documents associated with bringing a new LINAC on-line
