Job Summary As a member of the leadership team in the Information Management Systems and Services Department, the Associate Director, Data Networks (Associate Director), reports to the Director of Networks and Support Services (Director).
The Associate Director is a technical manager whose primary responsibility is to establish the overall data network architecture and strategic plan in addition to leading and developing a team of data network engineers. The role involves providing technical oversight and coordinating complex network projects and enhancements for the Caltech campus. Thorough knowledge of data networking best practices and the ability to provide technical leadership are required. Additional responsibilities include mentoring team members, managing procurements and inventory, and planning for increased data requirements in 3- and 5-year timeframes.
Job Duties Duties include, but are not limited to, providing technical oversight, conducting technical research on data network trends and platforms, assigning resources to manage data network requirements in new construction and renovation projects, developing maintenance schedules for wired, wireless, research, firewall, and virtual private network equipment, advising customers on networking availability, overseeing multiple simultaneous projects, preparing budgets, schedules, scopes of work and status reports. In addition, this position is responsible for managing vendor relationships, negotiating purchase and support contracts. The Associate Director must maintain close working relationships with IMSS colleagues, Institute customers and management, and outside professionals.
Establish overall data network technical architecture and strategic plan.
Provide technical leadership and guidance for data network engineers.
Develop schedules and manage multiple complex projects including the implementation of multiple 100G connections to our up-stream network providers.
Manage and develop a team of data network engineers.
Oversee team activities to ensure that priorities are aligned with management and available resources.
Collaborate with researchers to define requirements for expanded data networking capability.
Forecast networking needs for 3- and 5-year timeframes and work with Director to develop and secure the needed resources.
Conduct technical surveys of vendors and platforms.
Support and participate in design, installation, and configuration of equipment as needed.
Manage troubleshooting activities and escalate TAC cases with vendors as needed.
Negotiate support and purchasing contracts with vendors, supported by the Procurement Officer.
Develop strong systems for procurement, inventory and billing.
Work with the IMSS Directors and Associate Directors to develop cross-team capability and efficiencies.
Other duties as assigned
BS/BA and minimum eight years of full-time professional work experience in some combination of designing, configuring, testing, or supporting local and wide area TCP/IP networks (to include switches, routers, and firewalls).
Technical knowledge of products from Cisco, Aruba, Ciena, Palo-Alto, InfoBlox, and the open source community (e.g. PerfSonar/iperf, BIND)
Understanding of networking technologies.
Demonstrated knowledge of LAN/WAN and WLAN support and engineering design.
Ability to apply complex design principles and methodology to ensure cost-effective and optimal use of resources and technology without jeopardizing network integrity.
Ability to evaluate alternative technologies and architectures in relation to Caltech's academic, research and administrative needs.
Strong oral and written communication skills.
Bachelor of Science degree in Computer Science of Network Engineering or related field.
Experience engaging in community activities focused on federated network measurements and network tuning (e.g., perfSONAR), federated identity management and certificates (e.g., InCommon) and SDN compatibility testing.
Demonstrated expertise in network assessment, design, and documentation, along with network management platforms (e.g. SNMPv1/2c/3, RANCID, Statseeker) and identity repository and policy engines (e.g. ClearPass, Cisco Identity Services Engine).
Proficiency with network analytic tools.
Previous experience working in Higher Education and/or in the research network community.
