The Stanford Institute for Human-Centered Artificial Intelligence (HAI) is a newly formed and rapidly growing institute within the Dean of Research. As an independent research institute, HAI's mission is to advance AI research, education, policy and practice to improve the human condition. The AI Index is an independent initiative at the Stanford Institute for Human-Centered Artificial Intelligence. The initiative is led by the AI Index Steering Committee, an interdisciplinary group of experts from across academia and industry. Its goal is to be the world's most credible and authoritative source for data and insights about AI.
The AI Index Report tracks, collates, distills, and visualizes data related to artificial intelligence. Its mission is to provide unbiased, rigorously vetted, and globally sourced data for policymakers, researchers, executives, journalists, and the general public to develop intuitions about the complex field of AI.

We are hiring one (1) full time (100% FTE), benefits-eligible, fixed term research associate for two (2) years. Although not guaranteed, there will be potential for an extension/renewal following the initial 2 years contingent upon additional funding commitments and/or programmatic needs.
Reporting to the Research Manager, the Research Associate (Data Analyst 2) will be responsible for developing the global AI vibrancy tool and contribute to the research needs of the AI Index program, including monitoring research on AI measurement, collecting data, consulting AI experts, and writing technical aspects of the annual report.
Please note that due to current COVID-19 safety measures, our office is working fully remote. Once COVID-19 safety measures are no longer applicable, this position will be based on the Stanford campus.
Work under consultative or self-initiated direction to assess and produce relevant, standard, or custom information (reports, charts, graphs and tables) from structured data sources by querying data repositories and generating the associated information. Distribute and disseminate reports to applicable agencies, researchers, management and other internal end-users.
Manage relationships with data vendors and collect data adhering to deadlines.
Find and consult with key stakeholders (faculty & graduate students, other AI experts) to review the technical writing and data in the annual report.
Devise methods for identifying data patterns, trends in available information sources using a variety of qualitative and quantitative techniques. Determine and recommend additional data collection and reporting requirements.
Identify new research, technical metrics, on AI measurement and report to the team.
Create and update figures, captions, and write technical explanations for the AI Index report
Create non-routine databases and their related information summary; develop algorithms and statistical model; and perform statistical analyses appropriate to complex data and reporting requirements.
Work with the research team to develop the AI Vibrancy Tool.
Serve as a resource for non-routine inquiries such as requests for statistics or surveys.
Lead the implementation of data standards and common data elements for data collection.
Collaborate with technical staff to standardize and systemize routine reports, dashboards, and metrics.
Education & Experience:
Bachelor's degree and three years of relevant experience or combination of education and relevant experience. Experience in a quantitative discipline such as economics, finance, statistics, or engineering.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
In-depth knowledge and experience using and applying analytical software, database management system software, database reporting software, database user interface and query software, and data mining software.
Expert ability to collect data using a variety of methods, such as data mining and hardcopy or electronic documentation study, to improve or expand databases.
Basic statistical ability.
Strong listening, verbal, and written communication skills.
Ability to manage multiple activities in a deadline-oriented environment; highly organized, flexible, and rigorous attention to detail.
Ability to use logic to calculate data; efficiently construct a database or scrutinize the form of a question.
Ability to work with data of varying levels of quality and validity.
Demonstrated ability to produce data in a clear and understandable manner meeting user requirements.
Ability to work effectively with multiple internal and external customers.
Preferred Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
Basic knowledge of AI concepts, such as computer vision, natural language processing, etc.
Motivated, self-starter & comfort dealing with ambiguity
Constantly perform desk-based computer tasks.
Frequently sit, sort, file paperwork or parts, grasp lightly, and use fine manipulation, lift, carry, push and pull objects that weigh 10 pounds or less.
Occasionally write by hand, twist, bend, stoop and squat.
Rarely stand, walk, reach or work above shoulders and use a telephone
