The Henry Wheeler Center for Emerging & Neglected Diseases (CEND) was established as a multi-disciplinary research unit in 2008, with the support of a generous donation by Henry H. Sam Wheeler, Jr. The mission of CEND is to help the University of California, Berkeley make innovative and substantial contributions to the global response to emerging and neglected infectious diseases. We at CEND believe that by educating potential innovators, connecting researchers from diverse disciplines, and investing in research, we can help the best and brightest minds at UC Berkeley access the resources they need to make meaningful and innovative contributions to our scientific understanding and ability to combat emerging and neglected diseases.
We are looking for a motivated, reliable Research Associate / Entry level scientist to conduct assay development and small molecule screening at the Drug Discovery Center at UC Berkeley, with the goal of finding compounds useful in neurodegenerative, infectious and other diseases. The position reports to the Drug Discovery Center lead scientist, Eddie Wehri. The High Throughput Screening Engineer will work with a world-class team of faculty and scientists, learning the design and implementation of HTS assays such as robust fluorescence-based protein disaggregation assays in vitro as well as in cells; construction, setup, validation and operation of Sample Management, assay miniaturization, automation and High-Throughput Screening methods; develop skills in a BSL2 and 3 environment; and be part of a motivated and highly innovative team doing cutting edge science. He/She will participate in compound library selection, compound resupply, and validation of compounds in relevant models, i.e. neuronal models differentiated from patient-derived induced pluripotent stem cells. The Drug Discovery center is integral to Berkeley's efforts to enhance translational science capabilities, including proof-of-concept for new projects, investigation of tractability, startup formation and fundraising with the potential to help develop first-in-class therapeutics for unmet medical needs.
Performs and supervises design, construction, setup, validation and operation of sample management and semi-automated to fully robotic integrated screening operation capabilities; uses functional Sample Management system and Data storage architecture, keeps systematic records. Helps develop fluorescence-based in vitro model systems to elicit protein unfolding and aggregate clearance, and other modalities based on project needs.
Transition of cellular aggregate clearance models to screening stage; researches solutions to technical problems, interfaces with vendors.
Execution of small molecule screening campaigns, including compound selection and dispense, data analysis, compound resupply
Effectively communicates results, issues and suggestions for future directions to the team
Interface with faculty, researchers and students - advise on screening, assay development; guide assay automation and miniaturization
Stay up to date on screening technologies and approaches and provide expert guidance for the campus; provide expert resource in setting up novel screens and conducting technology development
Expertise with biochemical and microscopy assays
Solid understanding of enzymology and assay conditions
Detail-oriented, reliably execute assays and make reagents
Demonstrated organizational and decision-making abilities to prioritize competing work assignments in order to meet deadlines while staying within budget and adhering to quality standards
Hands-on and methodical, organized and diligent
Self-motivated and takes initiative on tasks and projects.
Effective written and verbal communication, data analysis and presentation skills.
Ability to work in a collaborative manner; identify challenges and barriers and recommend resolutions.
Bachelor's Degree with suitable laboratory experience and/or equivalent experience/training.
Able to use data visualization software, databases and data retrieval tools (Tibco Spotfire, Abase etc)
Experience with Sample Management, programming languages
Interest in learning to write scripts for robots and/or experience
Interest in neurodegenerative diseases
Hardware engineering experience
Knowledge of robotic systems.
Salary & Benefits
This is an hourly paid position eligible for full UC Benefits. Hourly rate will be commensurate with experience within the range of $28.74 - $38.32
