The College of Engineering at UC Berkeley is recognized for its educational and research excellence, consistently ranking among the top rankings in engineering colleges in the United States. EECS is one of the largest departments at Cal campus, consisting of over 130 faculty, adjunct, active emeriti and PIR appointments, over 3,000+ undergraduates both in the College of Engineering and Letters and Science, with 700+ graduate students and 60+ staff members.
The Electronic Support Group (ESG) within the department of EECS, has been providing expert support, problem solving and for pioneering development of everything from laboratory instructional materials to building's security electronics. Besides electronics, the group provides expert creative development pertaining to optics, testing of semiconductor chip making and other hard science and technical areas as needed. The group is one of only three or four electronics shops on campus and unique in providing dedicated continuity at such a high level of technical and scientific expertise.
Specifically, ESG is responsible for the creation, planning, development, set up, maintenance and operation of all EECS instructional engineering and electronics instructional laboratories. ESG is also responsible for audio-visual (AV) support in EECS conference rooms and classrooms, both for the instructional and departmental activities as well as the support of capturing of on-line course.
The Associate Development Engineer reports directly to the Senior Development Engineer. The position exists to create new laboratory curricula in robotics, embedded systems and other areas as needed in coordination with other staff and faculty, who will be overseeing the course development and focusing on lecture content while this position focuses on laboratory content. This position provides for a high level creative talent and support function with continuity complementary to the creative initiative provided by faculty, and provides an institutional memory to maintain and bridge instructional laboratory development and support at a high technical and scientific level of practice and understanding to meet faculty needs for cutting edge laboratory experiences for their students, while providing a dedicated continuity surpassing what faculty can provide given the other demands on their time.
Provides primary professional engineering and engineering technician support as part of academic instructional lab and/or research projects and programs. Engineering activities include the design, construction, testing of experimental systems, and operation of analytical systems, establishment of performance specifications, user training and documentation. Engineering technician tasks include confirming performance and high level troubleshooting, as needed.
50% Participates in the support of instructional laboratories including basic electronics, feedback controls, robotics/mechatronics designs, IC design and RF labs., Under review by senior level engineers, provide best practice in analysis of information or in the solution of physical and engineering problems.
Responsible for support on all electronics in the labs, from AV equipment to all test instruments on the lab benches as well as electronics components in stock for the experiment; duties include setup and keeping lab stations organized and functional.
Coordinate with instructors and GSIs to provide electronic components to students; Assists instructors and presenters on proper usage of equipment.
Troubleshoot and fix problems as needed.
25% Under general supervision, provides full range of support in designs, prepares engineering plans and specifications of moderate complexity for novel laboratory equipment, instruments and research projects.
Interacts with faculty/research staff in the design and development phase.
Identifies project specifications and parameters.
Assists with design, construction, assembly and testing of complex experimental equipment and instrument systems. Involving both analog and digital electronics, including computer interfaces, embedded networked systems, robotics, optics, real-time systems, microscopes, amplification and isolations, actuators and sensors.
Provides engineering information and advice to Principal Investigators and/or other faculty and research personnel with administrative responsibility for the research program or teaching facility.
Work subject to review by senior level Engineer.
15% Works with and sometimes provides input and guidance to other R&D Engineers, technicians and students. Assists with the needs of unit in support of implementation of business processes.
10% Gathers and analyzes data; prepares engineering reports, drawings and status reports from above activities.
