The Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology at the University of California, Irvine (UCI) is accepting applications for a faculty position at the Associate or Full Professor level in the Health Sciences Clinical Professor Series in the division of Maternal-Fetal Medicine to serve as the Co-Director of the Fetal Therapy and Surgery Center (FTSC) at Children's Hospital of Orange County (CHOC) and Director of the Division of Fetal Therapy and Surgery (FTS) at UCI who in collaboration and partnership with the other Co-Director (a Pediatric Surgeon), will oversee, coordinate, administer the medical and surgical services of the FTSC and FTS. Both Co-Directors will provide clinical leadership and strategic vision to both programs to enhance growth and development for both programs. Expected to work collaboratively with both CHOC and UCI leadership.
In collaboration with the other Co-Director of the program, this joint role will be responsible for meeting the goals of these programs through:
Leadership - Provide mentorship and leadership, guide faculty at UCI and CHOC as well as staff at both entities in the establishment and growth of the new FTSC.
Operations Oversight - With support from administrative and clinical program leaders, provide oversight of design, programming, and build-out of the CHOC-UCI Special Delivery Unit (SDU) for high-risk deliveries of healthy mothers with at-risk fetuses. This responsibility includes space and equipment planning, budget development, financial management, staffing and management, scheduling, and patient satisfaction.
Strategic Planning - Develop short-term and long-term goals for the FTSC and FTS program at UCI. Create strategic plans for program development and growth.
Operations - Plan and oversee clinical and administrative operations and programs.
Program Funding - Organize the efforts to seek grant funding and/or philanthropic support for the CHOC-UCI FTSC program.
Research and Teaching - Actively participate in academics and teaching. Provide leadership to build the fetal research program in conjunction with the other Co-Director, representing both institutions at national meetings including IFMSS and SMFM.
Community Leadership - Establish partnerships with local adult healthcare systems and community-based programs for maternal-fetal health care needs.
Staff Support - Serve as a liaison between clinical staff and administration
Recruitment and Retention - Oversee the recruitment and retention of excellent faculty to support the FTSC growth plans. This includes mentorship and support of training existing faculty at UCI/CHOC in the fetal intervention program.
As a Health Sciences faculty, responsibilities will include private patient practice, medical student and resident supervision and teaching, as well as other general faculty duties.
Candidates must possess an M.D. or M.D. /Ph.D., a California Medical License (at the time of start date), and certification in Obstetrics and Gynecology and Maternal-Fetal Medicine subspecialty by the American Board of Obstetrics and Gynecology. A minimum of five (5) years of healthcare experience including clinical expertise as well as business and administrative experience. Increasingly responsible leadership positions in maternal-child hospitals (or divisions thereof), or academic medical centers. Division-director or similar experience leading academic faculty and supervising clinical and administrative personnel. Scholarly achievement in peer-reviewed scientific publications and competitive grant funding coupled with a national reputation in Fetal Therapy and Surgery. Experience leading a medical education program training fellows, residents, and/or medical students. Working familiarity with the dynamics of managed care in California and with children's hospital/university affiliations. Training in advanced fetal surgery or interventional skills (i.e., laser therapy for TTTs). Proven leadership and management skills. Collaborative management style with a clear and straightforward communication style. Demonstrated capacity to lead by influence rather than control. Demonstrated ability to resolve different points of view constructively.
