DEPARTMENT OVERVIEW

Physical Planning, Development & Operations (PPDO) manages and oversees all University activities and services related to physical and environmental planning, design and construction, engineering, physical plant maintenance and operations, capital planning and space management, and the associated business services necessary to support these functions. The University's main campus is spread across more than 2,000 acres and includes over 500 buildings comprising more than 8 million square feet. The department includes operating budgets of over $48 million, manages a capital project portfolio of approximately $500 million, and employs nearly 300 full time staff to carry forth the duties necessary for the campus' development and operation.

Under the direction of the campus Landscape Assistant Superintendent, the incumbent is responsible for supervising the day-to-day operation of campus grounds maintenance and the supervision of Groundskeepers, Groundskeeper/Gardeners, limited and part-time staff, and a varying number of student employees.

JOB SUMMARY

Primary scope of work will be supervision of the Gardeners Services division by supervising the work of landscape / groundskeeping employees and provide backup support to other Grounds Service lines as needed. Receives predetermined work assignments that are subject to a moderate level of control and review. Works on issues of limited scope. Directs subordinates to complete assignments using established guidelines, procedures, and policies. Requires full knowledge of their own area of functional responsibility. Schedule and lead Grounds department safety training.

Salary Information: Salary Range: $71,700 - $75,000/annually. Salary commensurate with skills, qualifications and experience.

JOB DUTIES

75% Supervision and Training

Closely oversees day-to-day activities of landscape / groundskeeping employees.
Plans, organizes and directs routine landscape / groundskeeping operations.
Trains and supervises the landscape / groundskeeping staff to maintain an orderly, safe, and efficient grounds operation.
Uses knowledge in the care and use of power equipment and other landscape / groundskeeping tools to train landscape / groundskeeping employees and provide aid in general upkeep of staff-issued tools as needed.
Ensures safety, hazardous materials and landscape / groundskeeping policies and procedures are adhered to.
Enforces biohazardous materials and equipment policies and procedures.
Recommends and enforces proper handling and mixture of chemicals.
Responsible for performance management.
Maintains scheduling within prescribed budgetary guidelines.

25% Other Duties

Maintains proper inventory needs and purchase inventory.
Provide assistance with budget planning and maintenance as needed.
Required to operate vehicles as needed.
Responsible for coordinating programs (water abatement, weed abatement & irrigation) with various municipalities, governmental organization etc. as needed.

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS

High school diploma or equivalent certification preferred.
Working knowledge in landscape / groundskeeping services.
Working verbal and written communication skills in the English language, including active listening, flexibility, critical thinking, and the ability to multi-task and ensure effective time management.
Working decision making and reasoning skills, and ability to develop original ideas to solve problems and conduct operations analysis and quality control analysis.
Working, effective interpersonal and work leadership skills to provide guidance to other personnel.
Ability to provide plant and pest identification.
Basic computer application skills.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

Academic prep in horticulture preferred.
Supervisory experience
University experience
QAL (Qualified Applicators License -- pesticide applicators license)
Class B driver's license
Bloodborne pathogen and sharps disposal training.

SPECIAL CONDITIONS OF EMPLOYMENT

Selected candidate will be required to pass a pre-employment criminal history background check.
Must possess a valid license to drive in the state of California.
Ability to bend stoop and perform duties requiring physical agility and strength.
Ability to successfully work with and around a variety of fertilizers, insecticides and herbicides.
Ability to perform vertebrate pest control such as trapping, baiting, or other types of rodent control.
Ability to work outdoors through all seasons of weather in developed and undeveloped environments.
Ability to move materials and equipment weighing up to 50 lbs. with or without accommodation.
Ability to accurately complete required logs and records for reporting purposes in a timely fashion.
