The Office of Academic Affairs (OAA) at Stanford University School of Medicine under the direction of the Vice Dean of the School of Medicine, is comprised of faculty associate deans and staff members who serve a total population of approximately 4,000 faculty. The Office of Academic Affairs' main function is to support departments, the School of Medicine, and the University in safeguarding the integrity, fairness, and transparency of policies and processes affecting the faculty, and providing a supportive environment in which faculty can develop, flourish, and succeed.
The Office of Academic Affairs is seeking a team-oriented Data Analyst to be a key staff member reporting to the Senior Academic Affairs Analyst. This role will assist in the development of operational reports that support faculty affairs.
The Data Analyst understands business goals in higher education, is detailed oriented and highly organized.
This role will work closely with Senior Academic Affairs Analyst and Technology and Digital Solutions (TDS) group to support best practices across faculty systems, business intelligence and produce relevant reports for ad hoc requests from Faculty Affairs Administrators, Enterprise Strategy Analytics, Faculty Compensation, Office of Academic Affairs, and other School of Medicine administrative departments. This position will identify and select usable data from subtle and complex data patterns. Produce relevant, standard, or custom information (reports, charts, and tables) from structured data sources by querying data. This role will become familiar with faculty applications and work closely with Office of Academic Affairs subject matter experts to support and improve reporting efforts. This position will lead the standardization of faculty data definitions as well as assist in maintaining system and data process documentation for the department. This person will collaborate with other team members in the Office of Academic Affairs to conduct audits and reconcile data discrepancies across different systems and reports. Support School of Medicine faculty systems and may be involved in testing and providing recommendations to standardize data across faculty systems. This role may analyze data from surveys to assess specific programs sponsored by the Office of Academic Affairs.
Duties include:
- Work under consultative or self-initiated direction to assess and produce relevant, standard, or custom information (reports, charts, graphs and tables) from structured data sources by querying data repositories and generating the associated information. Distribute and disseminate reports to applicable agencies, researchers, management and other internal end-users.
- Devise methods for identifying data patterns, trends in available information sources using a variety of qualitative and quantitative techniques. Determine and recommend additional data collection and reporting requirements.
- Design and customize reports based upon data in the database.
- Lead the implementation of data standards and common data elements for data collection.
- Collaborate with technical staff to standardize and systemize routine reports, dashboards, and metrics.
- May test prototype software and participate in approval and release process for new software.

DESIRED QUALIFICATIONS:
- Prior experience working in a higher education environment.
- Experience querying, processing, analyzing, and reporting on large data sets using Structured Query Language (SQL).
- Experience in business applications such as Excel, Tableau and Oracle Business Intelligence.
- Expertise in creating data visualizations with ability to use data tools to present data clearly to non-technical audiences.
- Exceptional quantitative and qualitative analytical skills.
- Collegial and independent with demonstrated ability to gain the respect of team members, faculty and other staff.
- Experience with university business processes is preferred.
EDUCATION & EXPERIENCE (REQUIRED):
- Bachelor's degree and three years of relevant experience or combination of education and relevant experience. Experience in a quantitative discipline such as economics, finance, statistics or engineering.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES (REQUIRED):
- In-depth knowledge and experience using and applying analytical software, database management system software, database reporting software, database user interface and query software, and data mining software.
- Expert ability to collect data using a variety of methods, such as data mining and hardcopy or electronic documentation study, to improve or expand databases.
- Basic statistical ability.
- Strong listening, verbal and written communication skills.
- Ability to manage multiple activities in a deadline-oriented environment; highly organized, flexible and rigorous attention to detail.
- Ability to use logic to calculate data; efficiently construct a database or scrutinize the form of a question.
- Ability to work with data of varying levels of quality and validity.
- Demonstrated ability to produce data in a clear and understandable manner meeting user requirements.
- Ability to work effectively with multiple internal and external customers.
- Ability to take a leadership role on projects and with users/clients.
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS*:
- Constantly perform desk-based computer tasks.
- Frequently sit, sort, file paperwork or parts, grasp lightly, and use fine manipulation, lift, carry, push and pull objects that weigh 10 pounds or less.
- Occasionally write by hand, twist, bend, stoop and squat.
- Rarely stand, walk, reach or work above shoulders and use a telephone.
