Departmental Overview
The Government and Community Relations (GCR) office builds relationships with community leaders, elected officials, government agencies and third party advocates to further the mission of UC Berkeley in the public sector. The issues of primary focus for the GCR team include student financial aid, admissions, scientific research, and other policies at the forefront of higher education and government. GCR also coordinates the University's response to a wide range of political and policy issues, and advises administrators and faculty on strategies to gain constructive dialogue with government and community leaders.
The University of California adopts as a fundamental value, and priority, the repatriation of Native American and Native Hawaiian human remains and cultural items (funerary objects, sacred objects, and objects of cultural patrimony), in accordance with state and federal law. Reporting to the Assistant Chancellor for GCR, the UC Berkeley NAGPRA team is charged with facilitating outreach to, and consultation with Native American and Native Hawaiian tribes to facilitate the timely repatriation of ancestors and cultural objects currently held by the university, in compliance with state and federal law and UC policy.
The NAGPRA Repatriation Team reports to the Assistant Chancellor, Government and Community Relations.

Responsibilities
- First point of contact for general inquiries directed to the NAGPRA Repatriation Team.
- Handles all logistics related to consultations, events, team and committee meetings.
- This includes, but not limited to: scheduling, space and resource bookings, meeting preparation and taking minutes. Liaises with key campus partners (Libraries, Museums, Vice Chancellor's Research Office, Government Relations, UCOP, Legal, Marketing and Communications, Finance, Records department etc...)
- Maintain records of all communications with tribes and NAGPRA officials, develop and implement effective records maintenance process for new business and legacy NAGPRA files.
- Prepares correspondence and other written materials requiring some specialized knowledge of the subject matter.
- Edits and proofreads written materials for content consistency.
- This includes, but not limited to copy editing, annual mail outs to tribes, information packets, reports, grant applications and acquittals.
- Prepares and tracks all procurement requests in BearBuy for the NAGPRA Team, including routine financial reporting, invoicing and payments as well as determining general office equipment and supply needs for the Team.
- Works on sensitive issues, priorities, protocol, et cetera.
- May include new initiatives and compliance auditing activities.
- Works with department management to update/review/revise website to better communicate organization's mission, requiring substantive knowledge of organization's goals and objectives.
- Other duties as assigned.
Required Qualifications
- 2 years experience providing administrative support for projects, programs, a department, or organization.
- Experience coordinating events and/or community programs.
- Thorough knowledge in administrative procedures and processes including word processing, spreadsheet and database applications.
- Good verbal and written communication skills, active listening, critical thinking, multi-task and time management skills.
- Effective interpersonal skills to provide guidance to members of the NAGPRA Team, campus stakeholders, tribes, faculty, etc.
- Ability to work with diverse populations and demonstrated ability to effectively establish priorities and manage shifts in workflow.
- Ability to use sound judgement in responding to issues and concerns that require discretion and confidentiality.
- Ability to host Zoom and in-person events.
- Ability to manage competing deadlines and attention to detail and accuracy.
Education
- High school diploma and/or equivalent training or experience.
Preferred Qualifications
- Experience working in an academic, government or similar environment.
- Experience working with indigenous communities.
Salary & Benefits

Other Information
- This is a career, 100% full-time, 40-hours per week appointment, eligible for full UC benefits.
- This position is governed by the terms and conditions in the agreement for the Clerical & Allied Services Unit (CX) between the University of California and Teamsters Local 2010.
