Departmental Overview
The International House is a self-supporting residential and program center for up to 600 international and United States students and scholars from the Berkeley campus. Its mission is to foster intercultural understanding and respect among people throughout the world across cultural, economic, and racial lines. A professional staff, that is University of California employees, supports the mission of the House. In non-employment respects, the Institution functions as a not-for-profit 501C3 educational corporation.
The building, constructed in 1929, is approximately 189,000 square feet and operates year-round. Although the building is the property of The Regents of the University of California, the maintenance and non-structural improvements are the responsibility of The Regents but outside contractors work closely with the Physical Plant staff. The building has 8 floors, 4 elevators, 490 rooms/offices, 600 plumbing fixtures, 3 guestrooms, a dining room and dining facility serving approximately 400,000 meals annually, and a cafe.

Responsibilities
Mail Processors is responsbile for the day-to-day operations in the Resident Services Center that inlcudes; sort and classify all outgoing mail according to postal regulations (foreign and domestic) for all classes of mail; prepare packages for shipment according to postal regulations and various common carriers; prepare and record information; receive, record, and deliver incoming registered, certified and insured mail according to postal regulations; process improperly addressed mail received by International House, searching various name and address files and directories to locate addresses; label, sort, catalogs, brochures, and other publications for shipment. Sort mail for distribution to departments and residents; deliver mail to departments; pick up outgoing mail from departments and central pickup points; and perform other related duties as required.
Responsible for providing excellent customer service to residents, staff, vendors and visitors.
Responsible for loan and rental services of items such as, vacuum cleaners and refrigerators, functionality of coin operated laundry facilities, receiving, logging and distribution of mail and packages, and inventory control. Ensures accounting and recording procedures and trains student staff on inventory and proper accounting procedures.
Required Qualifications
- Ability to read, write, perform mathematical calculations
- Understand and follow generalized and specific work instructions, both oral and written; perform tasks for prolonged periods while standing, walking, driving, operating hand trucks, electric carts, forklifts, and other motorized moving equipment; lift and transport heavy mail sacks
- Two years of experience in the handling mail, including a working knowledge of postal regulations and postal rates
- Knowledges and abilities essential to the successful performance of the duties assigned to the position.
Salary & Benefits
This position is a full-time 10:00am - 6:30pm working hours per week. Non-exempt, bi-weekly paid position. Hourly pay for this role is $22.82, Step 1.0.
This position is governed by the terms and conditions in the agreement for the Service Unit (SX) between the University of California and the American Federation of State, County and Municipal Employees (AFSCME).
