This position is represented by SEIU Local 2007, and the collective bargaining agreement between the university and SEIU Local 2007 governs the terms and conditions of employment. Situated on 8,180 acres, Stanford University requires a significant amount of energy to support its academic mission and the research functions housed within more than 1,000 campus buildings. Efficiently managing energy supply and demand, as well as the corresponding greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions, is critical to the university's future.
Stanford Energy System Innovations (SESI) is the university sustainability program designed to meet the energy needs of Stanford campus through 2050 in a sustainable and flexible way. SESI is a major transformation of the university's energy system from the use of natural gas to electricity and has reduced Stanford's greenhouse gas emissions by 64% from peak levels, and potable water use by 18% in its first year of operation.
The program included construction of the Central Energy Facility (CEF) for heat recovery, and change from the use of steam to hot water for heating the campus. The switch from steam to hot water required the addition of 22 miles of new hot water piping, the subsequent abandonment in place of the old steam distribution system, and conversion of 155 building steam connections to accommodate hot water. The CEF also provides electricity for the majority of the university's main campus via a 100MW substation, which is about twice the current campus load. After four years of planning and three years of construction and implementation, the CEF came alive in April 2015.
