Position description
Under supervision, plan and design experiments, teach other students and lab members, perform experiments, make observations, record experimental data related to research projects, write and author manuscripts for publications, and present data in oral and poster sessions.
Use basic cellular and molecular biological techniques to perform tissue and sterile cell culture, immunologic assays, flow cytometry, cell sorting, ELISA, Western Blotting, and development of plasmid and viral-based gene transfer vectors. Manage animal studies including assisting with breeding, injections, tumor models, and maintaining and screening transgenic mouse colonies. Assist with fluorescent imaging, radiation delivery, necropsy, tissue processing, flow cytometry, cell sorting, and histology. Perform basic laboratory activities in the lab including ordering equipment and reagents, and researching journal articles to find appropriate protocols and regulations for experiments.
Job Functions
1) RESEARCH PROJECT SUPPORT-
a) Assist with experimental techniques in the following areas:
b) Assist with experiments in a proper and error-free manner
c) Assist with research plans and assist in the development of new research techniques
d) Create and enter data on spreadsheets. Record and interpret results onto spreadsheets
e) Process specimens for in-lab and outside-lab analysis
f) Prepare reagents
g) Assist with lentiviral preparations
h) Assist with molecular biological techniques to manipulate nucleic acids in the development of plasmid and viral-based gene transfer vectors.
i) Work in a Biosafety Level II environment, including working in a biosafety cabinet, processing tissues and fluids of human origin (e.g. blood and tissue specimens from Cancer patients or healthy donors), and handling viruses (Vaccinia Virus, Lentivirus, and adenovirus) and viral vectors as needed
j) Ficoll patient blood samples as they become available
2) LAB MANAGEMENT, MAINTENANCE, AND LAB SAFETY-
a) Perform lab management including ordering supplies, maintaining equipment, ensuring safety and cleanliness
b) Assist in maintaining a functional, clean, and orderly lab
c) Attend and present research outcomes at lab meetings
d) Handle controlled substances using established procedures
e) Ensure EH&S compliance including radioactive swipes, hazardous materials management, and records maintenance
f) Work both independently and as part of a team, establishing and maintaining good working relationships with PI/supervisor, post-doctoral fellows, and other members of the research group
g) Prioritize tasks, take initiative, and troubleshoot problems related to basic protocols and adaptations of protocols
h) Clean, lubricate, and properly maintain laboratory equipment on a regular schedule
i) Clean glassware and maintain the laboratory in a neat and organized condition
j) Order and inventory supplies and chemicals
k) Ship biohazardous specimens, conforming to Dept. of Transportation regulations
l) Maintain and update laboratory Material Safety Datasheet (MSDS) and lab protocols
m) Recognize safety problems and take corrective action
n) Properly store and dispose of biohazardous, chemical, and radioactive wastes
o) Obtain updated Material Safety Data Sheets for chemicals; read and use MSDSs
3) DATA ANALYSIS AND MANUSCRIPT WRITING -
a) Complete and maintain data properly, including lab notebooks, cell lines, bacterial strains, and animal records
b) Prepare and maintain accurate logs and records of research
c) Maintain confidentiality of the data
d) Interpret data from experiments. Perform data calculations and analysis from experimental results and use appropriate computer software including Excel
e) Organize data in tabular and/or graphic forms when necessary
f) Write up material and results for manuscripts and seminars
g) Read library literature and stay abreast of new developments
h) Perform simple statistical analysis using Excel spreadsheets
i) Research journal articles for the principal investigator or self to identify protocols appropriate for use in the lab
j) Maintain a computerized database of plasmids and cell lines
k) Use Living Image to analyze imaging results
l) Use Flowjo for FACS data analysis
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities (KSAs)
Theoretical knowledge in molecular biology and biochemistry.
Experience with all aspects of tissue culture including freezing, thawing, counting cells, and splitting cultures.
Demonstrated skill in the operation and maintenance of various lab equipment such as microscopes, centrifuges, and nanodrop machines.
Experience in the operation and maintenance of fluorescence-activated cell sortings (FACS) machines such as FACSCalibur, LSR II, and BD Aria.
Experience in caring for and handling small lab animals (mice, rats,) and in administering medications and anesthesia to perform phlebotomy and minor surgical procedures on animals. Experience in Euthanizing small laboratory animals. Familiarity with the writing of Animal Subject protocols and with surgical procedures. Willingness and ability to work with rodents and/or other lab animals and/or infected samples.
Experience with standard repetitive techniques that may be required in research protocols related to a specific lab. Demonstrated ability to read, interpret and apply protocols in conducting research. Demonstrated ability in following stepwise experimental protocols. Skill to troubleshoot adaptations of experimental protocols.
Demonstrated experience working with murine tissues; tissue processing, histology analysis, and knowledge in necropsy.
Demonstrated experience reading and using Material Safety Data Sheets. Demonstrated ability to follow established Safety and Biohazardous Material Guidelines.
Demonstrated experience working in and maintaining a sterile environment.
Demonstrated skill inaccurate record keeping and ability to organize, analyze, and calculate data. Knowledge in basic math for maintaining ledgers, and income and expenditure reports.
Experience with the operation of a personal computer and software application, such as Access, MS Word, and Excel. Knowledge to work with and learn new software for analysis.
Manual dexterity and legible handwriting. Ability to assist with general lab maintenance, including cleaning and restocking supplies and managing a regular schedule in the lab.
Strong communication skills (both verbal and written) are needed to interact professionally and effectively in the work environment, as well as effectively and accurately document research procedures. Ability to read, comprehend and discuss research materials.
Enthusiasm for learning new techniques and a genuine interest in scientific research. Willingness and ability to learn new skills, research methods, and scientific principles. Ability to train students on same.
Good organizational and time management skills.
Knowledge of UCSD Environmental Health and Safety requirements including the ability to write with correct syntax and grammar and to communicate ideas and protocols in writing to EH&S.
Knowledge is sufficient to coordinate studies with other departments and the lab. Skill to plan and organize work assignments efficiently and productively.
Demonstrated ability to assist in the writing of papers for publication, and research proposals.
Qualifications
Basic qualifications (required at time of application)
Doctorate degree or its equivalent in project area. Appointment is dependent on academic experience, scholarly achievements, skills and knowledge and needs of the Sharabi Lab and Department of Radiation Medicine and Applied Sciences.
Preferred qualifications
Postdoctoral or equivalent experience, and commitment to mentoring and research training service to build equitable and diverse scholarly environment.
