About the Position
The Senior Project Architect will be a critical part of building the studio and sustaining BNIM’s strong presence of design excellence on the west coast. Primary areas of responsibility include:
- Provide design leadership to the studio and project teams
- Cultivate the studio culture, manage project staffing and mentor team members
- Lead projects and manage client relationships (Project Delivery + Profitability)
- Provide technical oversight and leadership
- Support business development efforts
- Work in tandem with the studio principal to author strong projects, relationships and visible studio presence in the San Diego/California region.
Qualified candidates must be passionate about design excellence, sustainability and high-performance projects, have a minimum of 7 years architectural experience and be licensed in California. Experience will clearly show a strong creative design portfolio, which is essential, along with strong project leadership. Candidates must demonstrate experience with innovative materials and strong technical knowledge of complex building systems and structures often found in institutional, cultural, and mixed-use projects.
Key Responsibilities include:
- Lead design and technical aspects of projects to ensure efficient execution within scope and budget.
- Support the efforts of Studio leadership in translating and implementing client requirements to design criteria from conceptual design through installation.
- Lead project teams, foster collaboration, and demonstrate strong and effective communication and direction, which inspires high team performance, design ideas, and successful project delivery.
- Participate in developing and validating project scope and fee, budget, and scope of services during the marketing and contract development process.
- Provide complete and timely communication of project information to and from clients and project team.
- Coordinate with clients, consultants, contractors, sub-consultants, vendors, and other disciplines to ensure effective communication.
- Monitor construction administration during the construction phase.
- Understand and respond to technical implications and design decisions.
- Participate in and support marketing opportunities and develop successful client relationships for continuing business.
- Direct, organize, and mentor junior staff with responsibility for oversight.
We are looking for someone with the following skills, experience and characteristics:
- Strong design sensibility and approach
- Experience and proven success with business development in the San Diego/California market/s
- A collaborator with leadership and client liaison experience
- A collaborative spirit who is curious and creative, willing to take risks, explore, innovate and take initiative
- Well-established skills coordinating team efforts
- Strong verbal, written, and graphic communication skills
- A deadline and detail-oriented work ethic
- Passion for mentoring and developing team member
- Proficiency in Revit and other 3-D imaging software
- LEED AP is preferred
