Department/Program Description:
Stanford University Department of Theater and Performance Studies (TAPS) is seeking a Carpenter to provide leadership and technical expertise for all department productions. The Carpenter works in collaboration with the Technical Director, Carpenter Specialist Lead, and Electrician to ensure the successful engineering, realization, and safety of all scenic, lighting, sound, video, rigging and automation needs, while maintaining a safe working environment. The Carpenter will follow the direction and support the Carpenter Specialist Lead in the day-to-day workflow of the scenic construction shop working with other staff as well as student and temporary labor to meet the scenic, sound and video needs of each event supported by the department. This collaborative position will interact with professional and student designers, faculty, staff, and both graduate and undergraduate students, and needs to be a team player dedicated to safety. Other duties may also be assigned. The work schedule includes evening, weekend, and holiday hours. This is a full time Bargaining Unit position reporting to the Technical Director.
Essential Job Functions:
Working under general supervision, employees in this classification perform skilled carpentry work at the journey level in the construction, maintenance, and repair of structures, equipment and fixtures.
Work is assigned by the supervisor or lead, and carried out by the carpenter independently, selecting methods most suitable for the job. Work is spot-checked for quality during progress and upon completion.
Working from blueprints, sketches, drawings, either provided or produced, and oral or written instructions, construct maintain and/or repair structural woodwork such as: repair and install counters, cabinets, benches, partitions, floors, doors, stairs, ladders, building framework, roof structures, floor and ceiling tile, install paneling.
- Fit and install windows, doors, doorframes, etc.
- Select and install various sound insulation materials.
- Lay out work as required.
- Select specified type of lumber or other material.
- Shape materials to prescribed measurements to walls and ceilings. Construct concrete forms and pouring chutes; may do some concrete finishing.
- Answer emergency calls to make minor repairs to locks, remove broken keys, etc.
- Install or replace various kinds of building hardware, such as door closers, antipanic hardware, hinges, lock sets, etc.
- Keep tools and machinery of the trade in good condition.
- Repair or replace chalkboards and bulletin boards.
- May perform specialized duties such as building or repairing unusual customized items.
- Adhere to safety rules.

Minimum Qualification:
- Must be skilled in the use of the tools, materials, and equipment of the carpentry trade.
- Must be knowledgeable of applicable EH&S and OSHA rules, regulations and requirements.
- Demonstrated ability to operate woodworking machinery such as sanders, planers, lathes, power saws, and joiners, and specialized instruments such as a surveyor's transit, etc.
- Ability to sketch.
- Working knowledge of relevant building codes.
- Demonstrated strong communication skills (both verbal and written).
Certificates and Licenses Required
Must possess and maintain a valid California Class C Non-commercial Driver's License.
Physical Requirements
Ability to obtain and maintain a California Non-commercial Class C Driver's License.

English Proficiency Requirements:
Must be able to understand and communicate in English with adequate proficiency to follow directions from supervisor, read and understand safety guidelines and directions to prevent accidents or injuries from occurring, and communicate effectively with customers (staff, visitors, students) by listening and speaking clearly to them.
