PROJECT DESCRIPTION:
The Superintendent of Landscape, Grounds and Golf is a full-time exempt employee of The Annenberg Foundation Trust at Sunnylands and reports to the Director, Facilities Operations and Grounds and works in partnership with other Trust employees. This position is responsible for the maintenance, operation and management of the Center & Gardens, Administration Campus, Historic Estate and golf course.
For retreat operations the estate and historic residence are providing a place of tranquility and hospitality where national and international leaders convene to "promote world peace and facilitate international agreement." Sunnylands is charged by its Declaration of Trust to bring together leaders and experts from around the globe to find meaningful solutions to some of the most pressing challenges facing our nation and the world. Toward this goal, Sunnylands’ Board of Trustees has approved a three-year strategy to convene or co-convene high-level retreats in three important areas, Global Cooperation, Democratic Institutions and Global Health and Food Security. Sunnylands may host up to 12 retreats a year.
All Trust employees are expected to share in the strategic long-term vision of the Trust and contribute to the growth of the Trust from both a tactical perspective in the day-to-day operations and more importantly, from a strategic, long-term planning perspective, helping to bring new innovation and efficiency to this aspect of the Trust.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:
- Oversee the construction, renovation and reconstruction of the Trust’s gardens and golf course whether performed by grounds staff or outside contractors.
- Plan all maintenance and project work, applying agronomic and administrative expertise to achieve the agreed upon maintenance standards and long-range goals.
- Develop and manage an Integrated Pest Management plan that balances property conditions with the pest pressures of the desert with an eye on sustainability.
- Prioritize employee and public safety above all else. Develop and manage safety-training programs.
- Prepare the annual budget for the maintenance and capital improvement of the property. Implement policies established in accordance with the long-range plan and defined maintenance standards.
- Manage the scheduling and routing of staff and equipment to accomplish the work.
- Acquire equipment and purchase necessary supplies to maintain the grounds.
- Responsible for inventory control, equipment maintenance programs.
- Communicate regularly with the Director, Facilities Operations and Grounds to discuss activities, goals, plans and customer input.
- Train, direct and supervise staff.
- Build a "Team" atmosphere with subordinates and other Trust employees.
- Institute a positive work atmosphere that promotes quality, safety and delivering services that exceed expectations.
- Participate in strategic planning and long-term goal setting planning and strategies.
- Ensure properties are maintained in a first class manner - includes performing regular site inspections.
- Manage service providers to ensure top quality work is performed in a timely manner on properties.
- Establish schedules for routine site inspections and maintenance specification standards for service providers.
- Ensure efficient water management procedures are in place and being utilized.
- Approve all expenditures and exercise cost control measures to keep operating and capital expenses in line with the approved budget.
- Instruct subordinate staff on the operation and care of mowing and other equipment.
- Ability to supervise, assess, schedule and execute a tree maintenance plan for various types of trees on property.
- Ability to schedule and supervise maintenance work to achieve the most efficient utilization of workers and equipment.
- Prepare clear and concise reports.
- Maintain effective employee and public relations.
- Assist in the administration function by maintaining maintenance records, develop required maintenance reports; track maintenance expenses including payroll, supplies, fertilizer, chemicals, and pesticides.
- Review monthly reports and research; explain budget variances.
- Ability to respond to calls after hours.
- Work to implement and enhance the long-term sustainability goals of the Trust.
- Coordinate maintenance activities with other departments to ensure exceptional guest experience.
SKILLS NEEDED:
- Knowledge of turf grass and horticulture management in a desert environment.
- Strong working knowledge of golf facility and landscape principles, practices and methods.
- Requires a high degree of administrative and executive ability, especially in terms of problem solving and decision making.
- Knowledge of current federal, state and local laws and regulations affecting the management of operations.
- Excellent written and presentation skills.
- Ability to effectively communicate with co-workers and management.
- Outstanding interpersonal skills.
- Working knowledge of light and heavy maintenance equipment and automotive equipment.
- Skill in the use of a variety of equipment repair tools; working knowledge of the theory, care and operation of equipment.
- Working knowledge of the hazards and safety precautions of the profession.
- Ability to move heavy objects.
- Ability to work in a variety of weather conditions.
- Excellent time management, organization and prioritization skills.
QUALIFICATIONS:
The Superintendent of Landscape, Grounds and Golf will have the following experience:
- Bachelor’s degree in Agronomy, Turf Management, Horticulture or related field preferred.
- 10+ years of related equivalent experience of related golf course and landscape maintenance (desert environment preferred) required.
- California Driver’s License
- QAC or QAL in good standing
- Proficient in Microsoft Word and Excel.
- Ability to operate all equipment used for golf course and grounds management.
- Working knowledge of equipment, materials, and supplies used in golf course maintenance.
- Extensive knowledge of landscaping to improve golf course design and to recognize the need for proper pruning, planting, spraying, and related care; knowledge of soils and turf; knowledge of fertilizers and chemicals used in golf course maintenance.
