DESCRIPTION
The Senior Director, Operations and Strategy for the Office of Health Equity, Diversity, and Inclusion (HEDI) is responsible in leading the development, implementation and ongoing management of programs to ensure equity across UC San Diego Health. Responsible for overseeing multiple, simultaneous initiatives, and ensure consistency and alignment with HEDI overall strategy and goals. Responsible for team culture and team member development. This role will report directly to the Chief Administrative Officer, Health Equity, Diversity and Inclusion.
Incumbent independently uses and applies wide-ranging experience and proficiency in organizational development, effectiveness, business process analysis and strategic planning on projects that typically have organization-wide impact. Understands business needs and how systems, both technical and nontechnical, can support those needs. Uses organizational development concepts and organization objectives to resolve the most complex issues with organization-wide impact or great political sensitivity, where analysis of circumstances and information requires an in-depth evaluation of factors. Exercises judgment in selecting methods, techniques and evaluation criteria for obtaining results. Internal and external contacts often pertain to organization plans and objectives. Is considered a subject matter expert of the organization and often recognized as an expert externally in the industry.
Key Responsibilities:
- Health Equity Operations – Provides oversight and strategic direction of programs and initiatives within the Department of HEDI to advance Health Equity goals and strategies. Plans and monitors the day to day operations and objectives of the HEDI team. Regularly evaluates the efficiency of the work objectives of the HEDI initiatives and goals. Revises and/or formulates policies and promotes their implementation.
- Leading People – Leads people within the department and across functional areas to solve complex organizational issues and to meet the office and organization's vision, mission, and goals, including managing relationships with external consultants. Provides an inclusive workplace that fosters the development of others, facilitates cooperation and teamwork, and supports constructive resolution of conflicts. Treats sensitive or confidential information appropriately. Works to improve and reinforce performance of others. Delegates assignments, clarifies expectations and holds others accountable for achieving results related to their area of responsibility. Encourages workforce engagement by building a commitment to equity, inclusivity, and anti-racism. Works collaboratively toward solutions that accomplish organizational objectives.
- Leading Change – Assesses highly-complex situations. Develops unique solutions, works with clients, usually senior leadership or their staff to address issues and plan, develop, and implement HEDI solutions in alignment with strategic goals. Initiates and manages the change process, taking steps to remove barriers or accelerate its pace. Communicates a compelling vision and need for change that generates excitement, enthusiasm, and commitment to the process. Clearly communicates the direction, required performance, and challenges of change to all involved parties. Identifies and enlists the support of key individuals and groups to move the change forward. Obtains and provides resources to implement change initiatives. Serves as a role model by demonstrating commitment to innovation and continuous improvement in organizational performance.
- Drive Results – Exceeds departmental and organizational goals related to advancing health equity. Makes decisions that produces high-quality results by applying knowledge, analyzing problems, and calculating risks. Delivers high-quality programs and initiatives and is committed to continuous improvement. Understands the overall financial performance of the organization and applies financial concepts and practices to establish and maintain realistic budgets. Responsible for helping to develop a budget for the Office of HEDI and working within the constraints of the budget.
- Advising – Acts as an advisor and be a sounding board to the executive. Central point of contact and owner of content for all executive’s leadership meetings. Works with HEDI leadership to ensure follow-up on deliverables and escalate key issues that are stalled.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
- Bachelor's degree in organizational development, business administration, human resources or related area, and seven or more years of relevant experience; OR an equivalent combination of experience, education and training.
- Proven expertise and progressive experience in the field of Equity, Diversity and Inclusion, ideally involving high-level project management and implementation of large scale initiatives across a complex, highly-matrixed organization.
- Exceptional communication skills. Ability to build rapport and effectively deliver sensitive information to leadership, team members and various constituents both within the organization and greater community.
- Strong presentation skills, including ability to prepare and deliver PowerPoint presentations for various audiences.
- Demonstrated experience guiding and advising less-experienced team members.
- Thorough knowledge of the organizational development and effectiveness field, theories, models to assess, design and implement customized organizational interventions.
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS
- Master's degree or PhD in a relevant field highly desired.
- EDI experience within a large healthcare organization, including developing EDI programs and initiatives, highly preferred.
- Strong understanding of health equity data and analytics and leveraging data and analytics to drive change.
- Experience working with community and/or population health initiatives to advance health equity
- Experience managing teams.
SPECIAL CONDITIONS

- Must be able to work various hours and locations based on business needs.
