The Department of Aerospace and Mechanical Engineering at the University of Southern California seeks an energetic and motivated individual to become the Instructional Lab Technician for all undergraduate laboratories in the Department. Under direction of the Instructional Laboratory Manager, this position will support the daily departmental instructional lab needs.
Current facilities include 2 instructional labs, 1 supply room and 1 machine shop area. This space is in heavy rotation and use by undergraduate students in their third and fourth years, with multiple innovative and unique projects that range over a variety of fields and technologies.
The core job duties include: Providing advanced and specialized laboratory technical services to staff, faculty, and students of instructional labs. Preparing and maintaining laboratory devices, facilities, and materials for experiments. Leading and assisting laboratory assistants and students in their work. In addition, undergraduates in the AME Departmentâs senior projects course will rely heavily on the expertise and assistance of the Laboratory Technician in the fabrication, design, and testing of their projects.
The successful applicant will be responsible for the following:
- Interface and collaboration with laboratory staff and instructors to coordinate lab experiments. The ability to communicate and work with both students and faculty is essential.
- Assist in defining and describing lab-specific procedures and experiments.
- Organization and maintenance of all instructional lab facilities, ensuring an orderly and operable condition at all times, and compliance with health and safety standards.
- Assist in control, cataloging, and monitoring of supply inventories and equipment usage by faculty and students.
- Aids in specifying experimental equipment, computer parts, measurement systems, etc.
- Maintenance, diagnosis, and repair/replacement of all equipment in the instructional labs. This includes oscilloscopes and other standard electronics laboratory equipment, specialized devices and apparati used for instruction, computer work stations, and standard machine shop equipment.
- Constructs or adapts specialized lab equipment to meet specific instruction or experimental needs.
- Supervision and training of technical assistants, Teachings Assistants, and student workers in laboratory operations.
- Aids and directs laboratory assistants and students in the independent projects.
- Preferred applicants would possess a Bachelorâs degree in engineering or equivalent.
- The position requires experience in practical engineering methods, both classical and modern experimental techniques, sensors and instrumentation, signal analysis and processing, and technical communications. This includes experience with mechanical design as well as circuit design and troubleshooting. Experience with LabVIEW, microcontrollers, Matlab or python programming, additive manufacturing, CNC machining, and solid modeling (NX, SolidWorks or equivalent) is preferred.
The hourly rate range for this position is $21.88 - $24.42. Minimum Field of Expertise: Knowledge of laboratory procedures and equipment specific to area of instruction. Knowledge of database operations and data acquisition. Ability to plan, prioritize, organize and schedule activities to meet both short-term and long- term deadlines.
