Job Description/Summary:
The Director of Architecture is the person in the firm empowered to ensure that the Architecture Division is operating within quality, cost and time expectations of the company. The Director of Architecture manages, directs and coordinates the successful execution of architecture projects from start to completion to achieve the desired objectives, margin and profitability goals as set forth by the company. The Director of Architecture could also serve in the role as a Sr. Project Architect if Project work load mandates. The Director of Architecture aids the President in formulating and administering organization policies by performing the following essential duties personally or through subordinate managers.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
- Participate as a collaborative, tactical partner in the development and implementation of short-term and long term strategic planning.
- Provides oversight of individual project budgets and schedules, working understanding of individual project progress, forecasts of future projects as well as forecasts of Department profitability. Establishes, monitors and evaluates, in congruence with the Controller and President/CEO, Architecture department budget, profit goals, cash flow projection and project profitability goals.
- Risk Management – Architect of Record with Governing Agencies. Evaluates probability of success with each potential project. Monitors and if needed manages issues on individual projects or with individual clients.
- Participate in evaluation of staff, identification of skills needed, implements training, mentoring, motivating, disciplining and delegation of work based upon evaluations. Conducts staff performance evaluations and makes salary recommendations. Reinforce adherence to standards and reporting on each project. Creates manpower projections and manages labor resources within approved budget relative to both present and forecasted needs.
- Ensures the successful execution and completion of architecture projects by monitoring project progress so that that all reasonable activities are carried out to complete the projects within the scope, services, schedule and established budgets. Monitors and presents monthly reports on project performance as requested by the President/CEO.
- Collaborates and coordinates with the Construction Department as well as Finance, Human Resources, Legal and Information Technology.
- Seeks, fosters and maintains external relationships with clients and potential clients. Participates in new business presentations and assists in drafting new business proposals. Develop and maintain relationships with consulting engineers, contractors, vendors and other professionals for profitable partnering opportunities.
Knowledge required:
- Administration and Management- Knowledge of business and management principles involved in strategic planning, resource allocation, human resources modeling, leadership technique, production methods, and coordination of people and resources.
- Personnel and Human Resources- Knowledge of principles and procedures for personnel recruitment, selection, training, and compensation.
- Customer and Personal Service- Knowledge of principles and processes for providing customer and personal services. This includes customer needs assessment, meeting quality standards for services, and evaluation of customer satisfaction.
- Economics and Accounting- Knowledge of economic and accounting principles and practices, the financial markets, banking and the analysis and reporting of financial data.
- Sales and Marketing- Knowledge of principles and methods for promoting, and selling services. This includes marketing strategy and tactics, and promotion tracking.

- Environment – Ability to withstand exposure to air-conditioned/heated office environment and low noise levels from office equipment and voices.
- Bachelor’s Degree in Architecture or Fifteen (15) years of Architecture practice experience.
- California Architecture license and NCARB certification.
