Los Angeles Unified School District (LAUSD) is seeking a CHIEF RISK OFFICER to oversee one of the largest risk management programs in California, including the health and welfare benefits impacting employees, dependents, and retirees; including the Owner Controlled Insurance Program which covers majority of the District’s construction projects and activities. You will also be responsible for administering approximately $1 billion in District funds.
The individual chosen to fill this position will become an integral part of LAUSD's executive team and will direct LAUSD's comprehensive portfolio of risk management and insurance services.
LAUSD anticipates hiring a CHIEF RISK OFFICER who is well versed in the area of insurance, including employee group health and risk management. He/she will be budget savvy, strategic and an innovative leader with a proven track record of effectively leading and directing enterprise-wide insurance and risk management services of large organizations, preferably within the public sector.
The ideal candidate for this senior management position will have: Executive level experience and knowledge of risk management. Is familiar with best practices, and trends, as well as the industry-wide challenges impacting public sector agencies.
Ability to seek solutions and strategic opportunities within the current political and fiscal environment to maximize the effectiveness and efficiency of our insurance and risk management services. Ability to navigate through a complex political and legal environment.
Significant experience in evaluating and forecasting organizational needs and fiscal demands to align long-range plans with strategic goals.
Further, he/she is an executive who seeks novel approaches to challenges and opportunities to maximize the effectiveness of our service through re-engineering, collaboration, and fiscal responsibility.
Effective communication written and verbal, and the ability to explain complex issues to non-insurance professionals are essential as he/she will work closely with a wide range of individuals including Board Members, the Superintendent, the executive team, labor partners, co-workers and subordinate staff to advises on key strategic risk management issues impacting the District.
ENTERANCE EXPERIENCE: Five (5) years of risk management experience at the management or executive level with direct administrative authority over a multi-unit risk management organization.
Experience in at least two of the major responsibilities in risk finance, integrated disability, or employee group health benefits is required.
Experience in investigation and adjustment of workers’ compensation claims and general liability claims in the public sector is preferable.
Possession of valid certification as an Associate of Risk Management (ARM), Chartered Property and Casualty Underwriter (CPCU), Associate in Claims (AIC), or Certified Employee Benefits Specialist (CEBS) preferred.
Special: A valid California Driver License. Use of an automobile.
