FIELD RESEARCHER 3 (Quail Ridge Director)
Department Description
The UC Davis Natural Reserves - Bodega Marine, Jepson Prairie, Lassen Field Station, McLaughlin, Quail Ridge, and Stebbins Cold Canyon - encompass over 10,000 acres and are part of the UC Natural Reserve System (NRS) administered by the Davis campus. These reserves provide research and instructional facilities for resident and campus-based faculty, researchers, and students. Primary research emphases are integrative biological sciences including but not limited to ecology, behavior, and conservation, with additional use from engineering, humanities, physical and social sciences.
Job Summary
Under the direction of the Director of the UC Davis Natural Reserve System (NRS), manage, coordinate, and support field programs at the Quail Ridge Reserve. Oversees all reserve use and ensures safety and regulatory compliance. Takes the lead in developing and implementing programmatic goals and reserve use policies. Oversees creation and implementation of reserve management plan. Represents the University to the public, including (but not limited to) negotiating on the University's behalf with local, state, and federal agencies; conducting public and K-12 educational outreach; and seeking and cultivating prospective donors. Plans implements new reserve facilities; supervises and performs maintenance and improvements of existing facilities and infrastructure. Experience desired in academic program management, natural resource management, environmental research and education, and design and construction of buildings and utilities.
POSITION INFORMATION
PHYSICAL DEMANDS
- Work outside in a wide range of temperatures throughout the reserve.
- Hike rough terrain, steep hillsides, rocks and cliffs, carrying tools, sprayers, and/or research equipment
- Work in the presence of natural hazards such as poison oak and biting or stinging insects and wildlife.
- Sit or stand at desk for long periods of time
- Lift and maneuver materials and equipment weighing up to 50 lbs.
WORK ENVIRONMENT
- Work at the Quail Ridge Reserve in Napa, California
- Responsible to follow all safety protocols at all times.
- Flexible schedule including evenings, weekends, and/or holidays to meet operational needs.
- Limited time off during peak periods.
- Occasionally travel to attend meetings off-campus or out of state.
- Participate in Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV) Pull Notice System. Valid CA driver's license required.
- Provide clear information on reserve policies and procedures, support and provide scientific guidance to scientists, teachers and students.
- Develop and maintain effective working relationships with neighboring landowners, resource agencies, stakeholders, and various administrative groups.
- Work independently with minimal direction and take initiative to complete projects and assignments.
- Make informed, independent judgments on a wide variety of project-related activities.
- Make sound scientific decisions for setting policy on reserve use in coordination with NRS Director and Associate Director.
- Effectively interpret UCD policies and procedures for personnel, risk management and fiscal administration.
- Wear appropriate safety clothing: including hat, gloves, eyewear and shoes
- UC Davis is a smoke and tobacco free campus effective January 1, 2014. Smoking, the use of smokeless tobacco products, and the use of unregulated nicotine products (e-cigarettes) will be strictly prohibited on any UC Davis owned or leased property, indoors and outdoors, including parking lots and residential space.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

Minimum Education/Experience:
- Background and/or experience in, environmental sciences, natural sciences, or related fields
- Experience applying for extramural funding from state, federal and/or private sources.
- Experience managing reserve budget.
- Experience in land stewardship, including knowledge of techniques used in natural land management and knowledge of invasive plant species, control methods, and re-vegetation techniques.
- Experience developing, maintaining, and promoting outreach educational opportunities for K-12 grad students, teachers, and the general public
- Experience coordinating interns and volunteers
Minimum Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities (KSA) :
- Knowledge of sampling, collecting, and monitoring techniques in natural systems
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

Preferred Education/Experience:
- PhD or equivalent combination of education and experience in environmental science field
- Experience working in university/academic environment
- Experience with coordination and management of reserve activities, health and safety issues, and animal care regulations.
- Experience with donor cultivation, including creating potential donor lists and other strategies
- Experience developing various media products, including authorship and editing of articles (scientific and popular), interviews, advertisements and/or multimedia products
Preferred Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities (KSA) :
- Ability to present scientific information and NRS academic activities to a variety of groups, including campus administrators, faculty, students, stakeholders, and the general public.
