CARPENTER (Carpenter)
Department Description
Facilities Management operates, maintains and repairs buildings, building systems, equipment and vehicles. Our number one priority is to support UC Davis research and teaching. We are committed to delivering expert craftsmanship and friendly service, safely and cost efficiently.
JOB SUMMARY
Under general direction, provide journey-level construction services as a lead carpenter for construction, alteration and maintenance projects. Provide onsite carpentry, decision-making and direction of other crafts and contractors as directed. Responsible for demolition, new construction, lead and asbestos abatement and finish carpentry. Assignments are in coordination with other crafts or carpenters.
POSITION INFORMATION
PHYSICAL DEMANDS
- Climb ladders, on top of machinery and equipment, crawl, stoop, bend and work in tight, cramped areas.
- Lift up to 70 lbs. unassisted of equipment, material and tools.
WORK ENVIRONMENT
- Valid CA driver's license required
- Position will participate in the Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV) Pull Notice System.
- This position is subject to Medical Surveillance procedures and review in accordance with Federal and State Laws and Regulations and University Policy.
- This position is subject to completion of a Pre-Placement Medical Exam provided by Employee Health Services, at no charge to the applicant.
- This position may, at times, require the individual to work with or be in areas where hazardous materials and/or infectious diseases are present. Specific hazards include but are not limited to: asbestos, PCB's radioactive materials, industrial and laboratory chemicals, fuels, solvents, infectious materials and wastes, biological hazards and other materials labeled hazardous.
- Will require use of respirator and protective clothing.
- This position may be required to work a non-standard work schedule that may include nights, weekends, or alternative schedules such as 80 hours in 8 or 9 shifts instead of 10.
- Vacation usage by the employee may be restricted during peak workload periods as required to meet the needs of the campus.
- This position supports critical campus functions operating 24 hours per day, 365 days per year. To assure adequate support of these functions the employee may be required to participate in an on-call program to facilitate timely return of staff to the campus as required to meet critical needs. This on-call program may include requirements for the employee to inform the University how they can be reached during non-working hours, to carry University provided radios, cell phones, pagers or other telecommunications equipment which would facilitate communication between the campus and employee during non-work hours, or to accept rotating on-call responsibility which could periodically restrict the off-campus movements of the employee. If the employee's non-working hour movements are restricted by the University, employees will be compensated for their 'On-Call' time according to the established on-call rates. If actually called into work, the employee will be compensated according to the established campus policies. Employees may also be required to return to work after an assigned shift due to business necessity or emergencies. Compensation for 'Call-Back' will be in accordance with campus policies. Employee is personally responsible for following safety procedures and guidelines.

Smoking, the use of smokeless tobacco products, and the use of unregulated nicotine products (e-cigarettes) will be strictly prohibited on any UC Davis owned or leased property, indoors and outdoors, including parking lots and residential space.
QUALIFICATIONS
Required:
- Must possess a certificate of completion from a recognized union apprenticeship program, University apprenticeship program, accredited trade school or have the equivalent amount of experience and training comparable to a journey level craftsperson in Carpentry. Non-certified applicants will have their training and experience evaluated by a Credentials Committee of Facilities Management Sr. Leadership.
- Journey level knowledge and experience in the carpentry trade to include: cabinet making, wood and metal framing, installation of doors, windows, drywall and related practices.
- Experience and skill to perform standard commercial building maintenance, repair, construction/renovation procedures that include tools, equipment and materials.
- Knowledge of building codes related to the installation of carpentry systems.
- Interpersonal, verbal and written communication skills to clearly and effectively interact with a diverse group of individuals to secure and/or provide information to clarify situations, resolve problems, and negotiate services and/or agreements.
- Customer service skills to provide courteous service in person, on the telephone and in email, and to convey a professional and business-like image.
- Skill to instruct apprentices and craft helpers.
Preferred:
- Experience reading and understanding technical data, commercial building plans, blueprints, diagrams and specifications.
- Skills to analyze complex information or problems in an objective manner and derive logical conclusions to provide a sound basis for establishing priorities, selecting appropriate course of action for pursuit or recommendation to others, and to resolve conflicts.
- Organizational skills.
- Skills to work effectively and sensitively with individuals from diverse cultural backgrounds and perspectives to build mutual respect, fairness, and equity.
- Skills to evaluate possible system downtime and provide resolutions.
- Knowledge of protocols required to identify and safely mitigate risks associated with hazardous materials found in construction materials (building systems)
- Skills to provide clearly written and understandable reports and instructions.
- Analytical skills to understand and interpret technical data and mechanical and structural specifications and blueprints.
- Computer skills to operate a personal computer.
- Knowledge of Federal, State and local fire code.

This position is a critical position and subject to a background check. Employment is contingent upon successful completion of background investigation including criminal history and identity checks.
