Residential & Dining Enterprises (R&DE), the largest auxiliary organization at Stanford University, supports the academic mission of the University by providing high-quality services to students and other members of the university community. The department has an annual operating budget of over $350M, operates 24/7/365, and oversees a $3B asset portfolio comprising a 7 million sq. ft. physical plant across the campus. In autumn quarter of the 2021-22 academic year, R&DE will return to providing housing for over 13,000 students and dependents, serving meals at 17 dining halls, 12 retail locations, and operating athletic concessions and conference operations. Additionally, R&DE comprises 900 FTE staff in the following divisions: Student Housing Operations, Stanford Dining, Stanford Hospitality & Auxiliaries, Stanford Conferences, Maintenance Operations and Capital Projects, and a team of R&DE strategic business partners: Finance & Administration, Information Technology, Human Resources, and Strategic Communications.

JOB PURPOSE:
Perform complex finance functions and/or activities requiring advanced knowledge and application of internal policies, external regulations, precedents, and systems. May manage a key area within a finance operation or department/unit.
CORE DUTIES:
- Own Month-End and Year-End close process for areas of oversight within MCP and SHO (including EVGR), including burn rate analyses, AP holds and Open Commitment review; troubleshooting issues as needed; perform monthly accruals to ensure that expenses are booked in Oracle as they are incurred; prepare journal entries as necessary to ensure that expenses and revenues are booked to correct accounts; complete balance sheet and fund statement reconciliation.
- Perform full cycle accounting, tracking and reporting of project expenses and commitments for a complex portfolio (across mixed funding sources and cost centers) of multiple construction projects of various sizes (from $10k to $3mln) annually.
- Complete monthly variance reporting and analyses, including preparation of consolidated division-level and unit-level financial reports (variance, expense detail, open commitment, labor use). Assist departments with expenses and commitments review to ensure that charges are not misapplied, and that outstanding commitment balances are accurate. Monitor balances on blanket service agreements, evaluate and forecast burn rates.
- Lead meetings with customers to discuss reports and assist with understanding and operationalizing of the financial information. Identify areas of concern. Identify, analyze, report on, and discuss trends and variances with managers at various levels.
- Perform and design adhoc analyses of large complex data sets: reconcile complex accounts. Identify and resolve complex issues which may span multiple areas.
- Construct and assemble data for budgeting and decision making; develop conclusions, and present high level summary of recommendations. May develop annual budget for individual department/unit.
- Conduct analysis and resolution, and recognize exceptions. Participate in developing solutions that may require policy changes or the development of new processes; maintain broader organizational perspective in decision making.
- Execute internal control programs established by management, research new regulations, and recommend and implement approved changes. May manage compliance program for area of responsibility, and create complex compliance reports.
- Develop reports and presentations of complex financial data and metrics for management and third parties.
- Participate as a member of a project team; support new initiatives. Make decisions determining approach to managing and completing processes.
- Contribute to unit and organization strategy; assist in the development of change management plans and materials as needed.
- Develop and maintain desktop procedures and process documentation for area of responsibility.
- Define requirements, develop and implement complex test cases, perform system testing and analyze results.
- Participate in critical analysis of existing systems and processes, and identify opportunities for process improvement.
- Provide consulting advice to client group(s); serve as a resource on matters that require specific technical, financial, or subject matter expertise; support negotiations with external partners.
- May supervise, train, coach, and review the work of other staff, as needed. Contribute primarily through applying individual expertise.
MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS:
Education & Experience:
Bachelor's degree and four years of relevant experience or combination of education and relevant experience.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
- Advanced proficiency in business applications, such as Microsoft Office suite, especially Excel.
- Demonstrated knowledge of financial systems; internet and computer literacy.
- Knowledge of Generally Accepted Accounting Principles (GAAP).
- Strong communication skills, including ability to prepare materials for and clearly and effectively communicate information to internal and external audiences and client groups.
- Demonstrated project management skills and ability to contribute to or lead part of a multi-functional team.
- Hands on experience with month-end and year-end close cycles, including open commitment review, accruals, variance reporting and analyses.
- Experience with preparing user-friendly reports and executive summaries and presenting financial information to operational managers from multiple and diverse budget units.
- Owner-side accounting and finance experience in construction projects.
