Job Description
The specialist position is in Dr. Boris Bastian's laboratory in the Helen Diller Family Comprehensive Cancer Center at Mission Bay Campus of UCSF. This position will support research projects mainly focused on disease mechanisms of uveal melanoma with the goal to identify novel therapeutic strategies for uveal melanoma. The specialist will perform standard molecular cell biology experiments including cell culture, western blotting, immunoprecipitation, cloning, retroviral vector design and construction, drug response curves, isolation of DNA and RNA from tissues and cells, RT-PCR, standard flow cytometry and mouse work such as mouse breeding, genotyping, and drug treatment. The group is open to candidates with a wide range of experience and career goals.
Department Description
The mission of the Department of Dermatology is to be a world leader in the care of patients with skin diseases through outstanding clinical service, education, training, and research.
Required Qualifications:
• Experience in working with laboratory mice
• Experience in tissue culture, western blotting, and immunoprecipitation
• Experience in molecular cloning, PCR, RT-PCR
• The candidate should have good communication and inter-personal skills, be able to follow established lab protocols, and have an excellent work ethic and attention to detail.
Preferred Qualifications, particularly for more senior positions:
• Graduate degree in a science related field.
• Experience in working with flow cytometry, and mouse imaging.
• Experience in making lentiviral constructs.
• Scientific curiosity and a strong motivation to contribute to the field.
• At least two (2) years of previous research experience
Education:
• Specialists appointed at the junior rank must possess a baccalaureate degree (or equivalent degree) or at least four years of work experience in molecular biology or cancer research.
• Specialists appointed at the Assistant or Associate rank must possess a master’s degree (or equivalent degree) or five to ten years of experience in molecular biology or cancer research.
• Candidates must meet the requirements by the time of appointment. CV must list pending requirements.
Licensure/Certification/Registration: None required.
Physical Requirements:
• Good visual acuity and accurate color discrimination.
• The position requires excellent manual dexterity and familiarity utilizing delicate instrumentation.
• Occasionally lifts and/or carries objects weighing up to 20 pounds.
• Work involves possible exposure to malodorous vapors, low dose radiation, contamination by toxic chemicals and acids and presence of carcinogenic substances.
• Long periods of standing and/or sitting.
