Position Summary
The Water Innovation and Reuse Lab (WIRLab) conducts fundamental and applied research on biogeochemical processes occurring in natural and engineered systems and seeks to advance and innovate sustainable water and sanitation infrastructure. WIRLab is housed within the Department of Civil, Construction, and Environmental Engineering (CCEE) at San Diego State University. The CCEE Department hosts three ABET-accredited programs, Civil Engineering, Construction Engineering, and Environmental Engineering, as well as M.S. programs and Ph.D. programs (through the Joint Doctoral Program with the University of California San Diego) involving students in leading edge research.

The successful candidate will develop advanced optical spectroscopic techniques, design field experiments using real-time water quality monitoring with a fluorescence-based sensor platform, synthesize large data sets using statistical techniques and data analytics, conduct water quality analyses, and write manuscripts and extramural funded proposals related to the research.
Full-time, temporary position with a one-year appointment renewable for a second year depending on research progress. This position is designated exempt under FLSA and is not eligible for overtime compensation. Start date is flexible and may begin as early as Aug 1, 2022.
Education and Experience
Applicants must hold a Ph.D. degree in environmental engineering, civil engineering, environmental science, or a closely related field.
Specialized Skills
- Excellent written and interpersonal communication skills.
- Experience with large datasets and water quality data analyses.
- Evidence of advanced statistical analyses or other data analytics approaches.
- Applicants should be active researchers who are motivated to develop research ideas, present at local and national conferences, write proposals, and publish and disseminate research findings with the PI.
Preferred Qualifications
- Expertise in hydrologic and water quality fieldwork, water quality sensor deployment, water sampling or monitoring, and/or chemical or microbiological analytical techniques.
- Expertise using fluorescence or other optical spectroscopic techniques and/or PARAFAC modeling.
Licenses Required
Applicants must possess or be able to obtain a U.S. driver's license upon hire.
Compensation and Benefits
Salary placement is determined by the education, experience, and qualifications the candidate brings to the position, internal equity, and the hiring department's fiscal resources.
Hiring salary: $52,000 - 60,000 annually

SDSU Vaccine Policy
In accordance with the California State University systemwide policy, students, faculty, and staff must be fully vaccinated against COVID-19 or provide a valid medical or religious exemption in order to access campus. An individual is considered fully vaccinated two weeks after their second dose of a two-shot vaccine or two weeks after the first dose of a single-shot vaccine.
The individual hired into this role will be required to submit their completed vaccination documentation to the university's secure online health portal prior to beginning work. Individuals with an approved medical or religious exemption on file with the university will be required to participate in SDSU's COVID-19 testing program.
