Departmental Overview
Based out of the Division of Social Sciences and part of the Division of Computing, Data Science, and Society, D-Lab is a research accelerator, equipping scholars with the necessary knowledge, skills, and tools for cutting edge research. And, the D-Lab is a research incubator, co-constructing expansive communities of practice. D-Lab works with Berkeley faculty, research staff, and graduate students to advance data-intensive social science and humanities research. We support the exploration, development, dissemination, and application of methodologies, toolkits, and resources for engaging with next-generation data sources using innovative analytics. We think of data as a capacious category, one that is constantly changing as the research frontier moves. D-Lab's signature focus is research design - intelligent, rigorous, and tuned to the transformative opportunities opened up by a data- and computationally-rich world.
D-Lab provides cross-disciplinary resources for in-depth consulting and advising, access to staff support, and training and provisioning for software and other infrastructure needs. We offer a collaborative venue for intellectual and methodological exchange. Networking with other Berkeley centers and facilities and with our departments and schools, we offer our services to researchers across the disciplines and underwrite the breadth of excellence of Berkeley's graduate programs and faculty research.
D-Lab's user base is strongly interdisciplinary and campus-wide, including the professional schools as well as disciplinary departments. It serves more than 2000 researchers yearly with public and private workshops, consulting, events, working groups, data services, and other academic programs, like the year-long Computational Social Sciences course, and the Digital Humanities Summer Minor and Certificate Program. D-Lab has a strong culture of responsiveness to users and internal empowerment of professional and graduate staff. It is an internally differentiated organization with several teams while maintaining a relatively flat organizational structure.

Responsibilities
- Directs custom training and facilitated research programs and related services for the D-Lab including developing scope of work, identifying research questions and methods, identifying relevant datasets and variables to be used in trainings, specifying and populating databases used for training, with requisite levels of security and access controls, and developing curriculum.
- Identifies, hires, trains, and manages staff and student staff to participate in custom training.
- Serves as senior instructor or consultant in custom training and research programs.
- Directs outreach and coordination activities for custom training and facilitated research programs with fellow staff, campus partners, and state and national partners.
- Develops and implements D-Lab custom training strategic plan.
- Coordinates communications efforts and events.
- Develops research proposals.
- Leads and conducts computational data analysis efforts for D-Lab special projects using internal and external data sources and advanced statistical methods and data analysis and visualization techniques.
- Participates in professional activities such as conference presentations and publications to stay abreast of and contribute to social science data sets, research methods, and pedagogy.
Required Qualifications
- Requires excellent organization and planning skills.
- Requires great attention to detail.
- Requires advanced knowledge of data management systems, data administration practices and standards.
- Requires broad knowledge of qualitative and quantitative social science research methods and demonstrated experience in a subset of these methods.
- Requires demonstrated competency in R or Python programming, and in the use of a git version control system.
- Requires demonstrated experience developing curricula, lesson plans and training materials for a graduate level or professional audience.
Education/Training:
- Bachelor's degree in related area and/or equivalent experience/training.
Preferred Qualifications
- Familiarity with research computing, research data management, and data analysis workflows.
- Strong knowledge of Social Science technologies, tools, and data types.
- Knowledge of other domains, especially digital humanities, public health, or public policy, is a plus.
- Should be knowledgeable about data security and privacy issues and requirements.
- Demonstrated experience working in an academic environment with faculty, staff, postdoctoral researchers, data scientists and program leads.
- Demonstrated ability to communicate effectively across the organization and with external partners, both verbally and in writing and to work with both technical and non-technical personnel at various levels.
- Excellent written and oral communication skills.
Education/Training:
- Master's degree or PhD in related areas and/or equivalent experience/training.
- Minimum of 5 years of experience working closely with researchers in the selection and implementation of research data, computational tools, methods and technologies.
Salary & Benefits
This is a 12-month, full-time (40 hours/week), Contract Appointment, eligible for full UC benefits with the possibility of extension. This position is exempt which is paid monthly and Annual salary is commensurate with experience within the range of $95,900.00 - $142,500.00.
