DEPARTMENT OVERVIEW
Physical Planning, Development & Operations (PPDO) manages and oversees all University activities and services related to physical and environmental planning, design and construction, engineering, physical plant maintenance and operations, capital planning and space management, and the associated business services necessary to support these functions. The University's main campus is spread across more than 2,000 acres and includes over 500 buildings comprising more than 8 million square feet. The department includes operating budgets of over $48 million, manages a capital project portfolio of approximately $500 million, and employs nearly 300 full time staff to carry forth the duties necessary for the campus' development and operation.

JOB SUMMARY
Under the supervision of the Assistant Superintendent of Specialty Crews and working with the IPM Specialists, the incumbent will perform various routine unskilled and semi-skilled maintenance task throughout campus, both indoors and outdoors.

Salary Information: Salary Range: $24.72 - $26.24 / Hourly. Salary commensurate with skills, qualifications and experience.

JOB DUTIES
60% - General Maintenance Tasks
- Performs routine touch-up painting, make small drywall repairs, and make minor carpentry repairs.
- Repairs may include patching holes; preparation and painting of interior and exterior walls; replacement wall receptacles, ceiling tiles, and light fixture covers; minor repair of plumbing fixtures; replacement of covers/lids pertaining to valve boxes, access spaces, vents/louvers, etc.; installation, replacement, and adjustment door sweeps; replace and repair window hardware and screens; cutting back/ removal of landscape; all as they pertain to integrated pest management and pest exclusion.
30% - Pest Management Assistance
- Assist with setting and removing traps for both vertebrae and invertebrate pests; Perform visual assessments of buildings to find any points of entry or pest intrusion; create follow-up work orders to perform maintenance tasks for pest exclusion to buildings.
5% - Recordkeeping
- Keep detailed, accurate records of daily activities utilizing the CruzFix system and inspections forms. Assist the IPM Specialists with any monthly reporting.
5% - Other Duties as Assigned
- Drive campus-owned vehicles to perform various duties.
- Assist IPM Specialist and other Grounds staff with projects as assigned.
REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS
- Experience and skills in the safe use of hand and power tools and stepladders and extension ladders.
- Basic knowledge of or ability to learn maintenance tasks; assigned work could include painting, carpentry, and plumbing.
- Demonstrated skill and experience In Interior and exterior painting and drywall repair.
- The ability to work with and as part of a team, appropriately prioritize work and communicate progress to supervisor on assigned projects.
- The ability to work on multiple tasks, under pressure of deadlines.
- Demonstrated ability to work under minimal supervision and to follow written and oral instructions. The ability to read University correspondence, training materials, policies and procedures with comprehension sufficient to act appropriately based on the written materials
- Computer skills sufficient to use an on-line computerized maintenance management system and utilize that system to receive and update the status of work orders. Knowledge of personal computer productivity tools, including word processing software, e- mail, and Internet browser applications.
- Writing skills sufficient to draft work correspondence and prepare written Instructions to staff and student workers.
- The ability to perform basic arithmetic calculations necessary for maintenance tasks and record keeping.
- Interpersonal and communication skills necessary to work effectively and cooperatively with the UCSC campus community. The ability to work well with people from diverse cultural, ethnic, and socio-economic backgrounds
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS
- Hold a Cal DPR QAC or QAL in categories A and B.
- Prior UC university experience.
SPECIAL CONDITIONS OF EMPLOYMENT
- Selected candidate will be required to pass a pre-employment criminal history background check.
- Must possess a valid driver's license to drive in the state of California.
- The ability to move materials weighing up to 75 lbs. with or without accommodation.
- Ability to perform essential physical job functions requiring bending, stooping, and performing duties requiring physical agility.
