Position Summary
SDSU Facilities Services is a customer service-based organization providing facility maintenance activities through a transparent and deliberate process. It is responsible for the operation, maintenance, repair, renovation, remodel and alteration activities in support of the academic and research mission of the university.
The Supervising Carpenter will direct the work of the Carpenter Shop supervising skilled journey-level carpenters, semi-skilled workers, and student assistants in the performance of carpentry work to include providing input on performance evaluations; providing on the job training and instruction; monitoring and inspecting work; and creating work schedules. The Supervising Carpenter ensures a safe working and living environment. This position interprets plans and drawings; analyses job/project costs; tracks and enters daily labor on the automated facilities management system; assigns work to other shop workers and completes all necessary documentation for work orders.
The Supervising Carpenter will also perform the duties of a skilled carpenter to include new construction, remodeling of existing spaces, and repair and maintenance work. The incumbent builds, remodels, renovates and repairs various types of facilities, buildings, offices, classrooms, restrooms, sheds, scaffolds, forms, frames, fences, and other structures.

This is a full-time (1.0 time-base) benefits eligible, permanent (probationary) position. This position is designated non-exempt under FLSA and is eligible for overtime compensation. Standard SDSU work hours are Monday - Friday, 6:00 a.m. to 2:30 p.m., but may vary based on operational needs.
The individual hired into this role will work on campus at SDSU in San Diego.
Education and Experience
Any combination of progressively responsible training and experience which demonstrates achievement of journey-level skills equivalent to that acquired through completion of a carpenter's apprenticeship program. One to two years of experience as a journey-level carpenter that included work coordination responsibilities. Two or more years of experience as a journey-level carpenter, including one to two years in a lead/supervisory capacity.
Licenses and/or Certifications Required:
Must possess a valid California Driver's License or have the ability to obtain one within 10 days of hire.
Preferred Qualifications
- Asbestos Certification
- CFDAI Certification (Certified Fire and Egress Door Assembly Inspector)
- Prior experience at a similar higher education, military, government or a large multi-building facility environment.
- Experience in a union environment.
- Completion of apprenticeship program and/or formal course work or certificate program in mechanical/electrical trade.
- Experience managing maintenance and construction budgets.
- Completion of OSHA 10 and OSHA 30 Safety Trainings.
- Ten years or more of journey-level experience as a carpenter.
Specialized Skills Required
- Ability to effectively communicate and successfully interact with a variety of individuals in a diverse environment at all levels of the organization.
- Ability to maintain confidentiality and work appropriately within the department hierarchy communicating effectively to resolve problems; and to proactively resolve conflicts or disagreements in the workplace, makes suggestions and asks pertinent questions to facilitate effective communication.
- Ability to implement safety procedures, resolve problems and improve safety in the workplace. Ability to instill in others the importance of workplace safety rules and regulations and take appropriate actions.
- Ability to conduct hazard assessments, and address those hazards accordingly, and applies engineering controls as appropriate to address/mitigate hazards; promptly follows up on health and safety risks, taking appropriate action(s) and providing the necessary reports and documentation.
Compensation and Benefits
Salary placement is determined by the education, experience, and qualifications the candidate brings to the position, internal equity, and the hiring department's fiscal resources. Starting salary upon appointment not expected to exceed $6,500 per month.

Classification Salary Range: $6,464 - $ 8,196 per month.
SDSU COVID-19 Vaccine Policy
In accordance with the California State University systemwide policy, students, faculty, and staff must be fully vaccinated against COVID-19 or provide a valid medical or religious exemption in order to access campus. Individuals are considered fully vaccinated for five months after their final dose of a two-dose COVID-19 vaccine or for two months after receiving the only dose of a single-dose vaccine. Afterward a COVID-19 booster is required to continue to be considered fully vaccinated.
The individual hired into this role will be required to submit their completed vaccination documentation to the university's secure online health portal prior to beginning work. Individuals with an approved medical or religious exemption on file with the university will be required to participate in SDSU's COVID-19 testing program.
