The Department of Sustainability and Energy Management (SEM) brings an integrated and deliberate focus to campus sustainability. The department works to advance sustainability in campus operations, optimizing and prioritizing efficiency in all aspects of campus life, from resource and utility management to transportation and community behavior. SEM develops strategic, long-term goals that help reduce Stanford's environmental impact, supporting the university's mission.
Building upon successful energy, water and transportation operational sustainability initiatives, Sustainability and Energy Management (SEM) has joined waste operations and zero waste planning and implementation under the Office of Sustainability to achieve the University's goal of Zero Waste by 2030.
So, what is the opportunity?
We are looking for a Sustainability and Zero Waste Contracts and Operations Supervisor to bring creativity, an innovative mindset, and attention to detail to supervise and manage the waste hauling contract to deliver excellent customer service and operational success while achieving Stanford's Long-Range Vision of Zero Waste.

What you will do in this role:
The Supervisor leads and manages programs and functions under minimal supervision. This position is responsible for the management of the waste hauling contract and other sustainability and/or waste related contracts with the highest level of customer service to the campus and is responsible for overseeing vendors for contract compliance, auditing service levels and billings, approving service level changes, and investigating service issues.
This position collaborates with campus departments including Buildings and Grounds Maintenance, Residential & Dining Enterprises, and others and work with the Zero Waste Systems Manager and the Zero Waste and Communication Specialist to reduce contamination in loads and find opportunities to reduce waste.
The incumbent will have adept analytical skills to evaluate these efforts and understand emerging technologies that can advance campus programs and engage the campus community to help us achieve the University's goal of Zero Waste by 2030.
The Sustainability and Zero Waste Contracts and Operations Supervisor is responsible for but not limited to the following:
- Lead the coordination, planning and operations for the waste hauling contract and other sustainability and waste related contracts to deliver excellent customer service and achieve success on zero waste targets. (40%)
- Develop and improve the contract management protocols and procedures. Use creativity, innovation, data, and analysis to continually evaluate programs, functions, policies, and procedures. (30%)
- Serve as liaison for Zero Waste and the Office of Sustainability to hauler and represent the hauler program or function with internal stakeholders. (15%)
- Develop and manage budget with cost effectiveness, efficiency and zero waste strategies in mind. (5%)
- Collaborate with others and provide training to ensure that the campus community is educated, aware, and continually improving their behavior to achieve Zero Waste and sustainability goals. (10%)
- Other duties as may also be assigned.
To be successful in this role you must bring:
- Bachelor's degree and (five)- (5) years of relevant experience, or combination of education and relevant experience with contract management, operations, and customer service.
- Contract management experience with $8-$15 million with multi stakeholders.
- Operations and logistics experience.
- Customer service experience in a multi-stakeholder environment.
- Interest in in sustainability and/or zero waste field
- Must be inquisitive and self-driven.
- Ability to forge and maintain strategic partnerships across a complex institution.
- Must have the ability to pay attention to details.
- Strong writing and data analysis and reporting skills.
- Demonstrated skill in the use of spreadsheets, database programs, and word processing programs.
Strongly Preferred Qualifications:
- Demonstrated ability to develop and meet budget goals.
- Demonstrated curiosity and the ability to bring projects to fruition.
- Able to plan and execute projects on a timeline with moderate or little supervision.
- Ability to accomplish goals working through formal and informal channels, with diplomacy and tactfulness.
- High degree of discretion and judgement.
- High degree of energy and initiative, with the ability to work both independently and as part of a team.
- Excellent interpersonal, written and oral communication skills.
- Experience working in an environmental/academic setting.
- Finance background a plus.
- Academic and/or professional experience in sustainability and/or zero waste.
- Zero Waste certifications such as CRRA/SWANA or TRUE a plus.
- A balanced sense of environmental stewardship.
- Familiarity with higher education organizational and operational structures, ability to objectively think through impact of initiatives in an institutional setting, a plus.

Working Conditions
- Occasional work on weekends and evenings.
- Work involves long hours of standing and sustained communications/dialogue.

Core Administrators Duties:
