THE DEPARTMENT
Facilities Planning and Management (FP&M) serves as the lead organization for planning, developing, and maintaining the campus' natural and built environments in support of the university's mission. The department seeks to preserve and enhance CPP's history, aesthetics, physical assets, and natural ecosystems through coordinated planning, design, and construction of buildings, roads, infrastructure, landscaping and other physical improvements. As an advocate on behalf of the university and its auxiliaries, FPM strives to provide facilities that meet scope, budget, operational needs and functional requirements. FPM is comprised of approximately 200 facilities professionals (FTE) that also provides maintenance services including custodial services, landscaping, recycling, building and mechanical trades, energy and utility management, fleet and auto services.
The workforce is culturally diverse and multilingual. Its composition includes full time staff throughout FPM who are also earning their degrees and many whom have graduated from Cal Poly Pomona. The staff includes licensed architects and engineers, accountants, planners, project managers, administrative staff, carpenters, plumbers, locksmiths, painters, electricians, landscape architects, computer technicians, custodians and other building and mechanical trade technicians.
DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
- The incumbent works in the Paint Shop unit performing skilled work in painting and finishing of wood, metal, and other common surfaces on the campus. Performs general maintenance and repair of campus buildings, hardscape, and infrastructure. Work includes, but is not limited to, painting of walls, ceilings, signage, curbs, crosswalks, pipes, and other items and surfaces throughout the campus.
- Addresses code compliance, health and safety issues and special instructions; coordinating projects within the department and with other departments or agencies; and evaluating and recommending changes.
- Applies undercoats and finish coats with brush, roller or by spray machine; does paperhanging as necessary; and mixes and matches paints and finishes.
- Scrapes, sands, and fills surfaces in preparation for painting and finishing.
- Cleans and maintains brushes and other equipment including equipment rooms, paints simple signs.
- Advises in the selection, ordering and storing of painting materials; consults with other tradespeople; keeps simple records and make reports.
QUALIFICATIONS
- This position requires the ability to communicate effectively both orally and in writing. Valid California Driver's license, proof of insurance.
- These abilities normally would be acquired through any combination of progressively responsible training and experience which demonstrates achievement of journey-level skills equivalent to that acquired through completion of a standard painter's apprenticeship program.
- The incumbent must know how to operate hand and power tools; is required to have journeyman level of knowledge of the tools and equipment used in preparation for painting and painting.
Work requires thorough knowledge of the methods, materials, tools, and equipment used in the painting trade including painting, finishing, drywall, and paperhanging; and a thorough knowledge of the applicable state codes and regulations, including the Safety Orders of the Division of Industrial Safety of the State of California. Must be able to apply paints and finishes neatly and accurately; mix paints and finishes and match colors; erect and work from scaffolds, rigging and ladders; select the most appropriate materials; read, interpret and work from blueprints, plans, drawings, and specifications; make rough sketches; estimate cost, time and materials of painting work; maintain records and retrieve data using manual and/or computerized record-keeping systems; prepare standard reports; provide instruction to unskilled and semi-skilled assistants; analyze and respond appropriately to emergency situations; read and write at a level appropriate to the position; and perform arithmetic calculations as required by the position. Incumbents may be required to possess a California Driver's License valid for the operation of any vehicle or equipment they are required to operate.
