DEPARTMENT OVERVIEW
Physical Planning, Development & Operations (PPDO) manages and oversees all University activities and services related to physical and environmental planning, design and construction, engineering, physical plant maintenance and operations, capital planning and space management, and the associated business services necessary to support these functions. The University's main campus is spread across more than 2,000 acres and includes over 500 buildings comprising more than 8 million square feet. The department includes operating budgets of over $48 million, manages a capital project portfolio of approximately $500 million, and employs nearly 300 full time staff to carry forth the duties necessary for the campus' development and operation.

JOB SUMMARY
Primary scope of work will be supervision of the Grounds Specialty Crews division by supervising the work of Irrigation Crew, Turf Crew, Tree Crew, Equipment Services, and Pest Control employees and provide backup support to other Grounds Service lines as needed. Receives predetermined work assignments that are subject to a moderate level of control and review. Works on issues of limited scope. Directs subordinates to complete assignments using established guidelines, procedures, and policies. Requires full knowledge of their own area of functional responsibility. Schedules and leads Grounds department safety training.
Under the direction of the campus Grounds Assistant Superintendent of Specialty Crews, the incumbent is responsible for supervising the day-to-day operation of campus grounds maintenance and the supervision of the Grounds Specialty Crews: Tree, Turf, Irrigation, Integrated Pest Management, and Heavy Equipment, which could include limited and part-time staff, and a varying number of student employees.

JOB DUTIES
75% Supervision and Training
- Closely oversees day-to-day activities of the Specialty Crew employees.
- Plans, organizes and directs routine the Specialty Crew operations.
- Trains and supervises the Specialty Crew staff to maintain an orderly, safe, and efficient grounds operation.
- Uses knowledge in the care and use of power equipment, heavy and small machinery, landscaping tools, and small hand tools to train Specialty Crew employees and provide aid in general upkeep of staff-issued tools as needed.
- Ensures safety, hazardous materials, and Grounds policies and procedures are adhered to.
- Enforces biohazardous materials and equipment policies and procedures.
- Recommends and enforces proper handling and mixture of chemicals.
- Responsible for performance management.
- Maintains scheduling within prescribed budgetary guidelines.
25% Other Duties
- Maintains proper inventory needs and purchase inventory.
- Provides assistance with budget planning and maintenance as needed.
- Required to operate vehicles as needed.
- Responsible for coordinating programs (water abatement, weed abatement & irrigation) with various municipalities, governmental organization etc. as needed.
REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS
- High school diploma or equivalent certification.
- Experience in maintaining, adjusting, diagnosing, and programming computer-controlled irrigation systems.
- Working knowledge of safe operation and proper use of heavy landscape equipment.
- Knowledge of turf requirements including water, nutrients, mowing practices and various agronomic practices.
- General knowledge of Pest Control not limited to Landscape pests and structural pest work.
- Knowledge of landscape plant water requirements including trees, turf, ornamental plants, and native plants.
- Ability to identify landscape pests and landscape / turf diseases.
- Working verbal and written communication skills in the English language, including active listening, flexibility, critical thinking, and the ability to multi-task and ensure effective time management.
- Working decision making and reasoning skills, and ability to develop original ideas to solve problems and conduct operations analysis and quality control analysis.
- Working, effective interpersonal and work leadership skills to provide guidance to other personnel.
- Basic computer application skills. Working knowledge of PC computers and various software including Word, Excel, Powerpoint, Google Drive, Google sheets, Gmail, FileMaker Pro, and general internet use.
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS
- Academic prep in horticulture preferred.
- Ca. Dept. of Pesticide Regulation QAC or QAL (Qualified Applicators Certificate or Qualified Applicators License), categories A and B.
- Class B driver's license.
- Bloodborne pathogen and sharps disposal training.
- ISA Certified Arborist.
- Supervisory experience.
- University of California experience.
SPECIAL CONDITIONS OF EMPLOYMENT
- Selected candidate will be required to pass a pre-employment criminal history background check.
- Must possess a valid license to drive in the state of California.
- Ability to bend stoop and perform duties requiring physical agility.
- Ability to successfully work with and around a variety of fertilizers, insecticides and herbicides.
- Ability to perform vertebrate pest control such as trapping, baiting, or other types of rodent control.
- Ability to work outdoors through all seasons of weather in developed and undeveloped environments.
- Ability to move materials and equipment weighing up to 75 lbs. with or without accommodation.
- Ability to accurately complete required logs and records for reporting purposes in a timely fashion.
