Data Center Engineer
Department Description
UC Davis Health Innovation Technology (UCDH IT) Data Center Services Team is responsible for the management of our data center portfolio, installation, documentation, and design of all IT equipment within our data centers, and telecommunications closets. Data Center Services is the smart hands for all infrastructure teams and responsible for the physical integrity of all IT equipment. Also responsible for the oversight and vendor management of IT power infrastructure UPS/PDU's single and three phase, and DCIM support.

Responsibilities
The incumbent will serve as a data center engineer and provide Level 1 and 2 datacenter engineering and operational services for UC Davis Health technology portfolio. The employee's responsibilities include the design and engineering of all physical layer aspects of data centers and IT closets. This position will design and engineer physical layer cabling for our data centers, design & develop single line diagrams for connectivity, and document all infrastructure installed/deployed, responsible for all servers, storage, network, and security infrastructure installations within the three data centers and 280 IT closets. This position will provide design, oversight, and operational maintenance, of our power infrastructure comprised of 100+ UPS's, 1kRPDU(Rack Power Distributions Units), and Battery backup systems. The candidate will be the central conduit responsible for all communication between IT teams and data center providers. The candidate is responsible for all communication for IT closets maintenance, design, and operational support. This position assists with the design, engineering, monitoring, and installation of new or existing telecommunications rooms throughout the health system. This position reports to the Manager/Supervisor of Data Center Services. This position must have knowledge and experience with data center engineering and design and technology principles at an intermediate level.
Required Qualifications
Applicants are encouraged to upload license and certification required of the position:
- Must have at least two of the following certifications:
- Certified Data Center Either Design
- Certified Data Center Either Management
- Energy, Professional
- CCNA
- CCNP
- Microsoft Windows Certification CompTIA
- 3 or more years experience with engineering, designing, and supporting data center infrastructure technologies such as UPS's, PDU's, Network, Storage, Compute, and Security, fiber optic and copper connectivity methods including Ethernet, and other WAN/LAN topologies.
- 3 or more years experience working in or with retail or wholesale data center vendors and supporting power infrastructure.
- At least one year of experience working in Level 1 NOC/SRE function.
- Must have a valid California Driver's License
- Windows Server physical support intermediate understanding of hard drive
- replacements, memory upgrades, infrastructure installs, lifecycle refresh, assets tagging, vendor escorts, and capacity cabling & power management.
- Storage physical support intermediate understanding of storage infrastructure installs, lifecycle refresh, assets tagging, vendor escorts, and capacity cabling & power management.
- Network physical support intermediate understanding of replacements, upgrades, infrastructure installs, lifecycle refresh, assets tagging, vendor escorts, and capacity cabling & power management. Security physical support intermediate understanding of replacements, upgrades, infrastructure installs, lifecycle refresh, assets tagging, vendor escorts, and capacity cabling & power management.
Preferred Qualifications
- Windows Server physical support intermediate understanding of hard drive replacements, memory upgrades, infrastructure installs, lifecycle refresh, assets tagging, vendor escorts, and capacity cabling & power management.
- Storage physical support intermediate understanding of storage infrastructure installs, lifecycle refresh, assets tagging, vendor escorts, and capacity cabling & power management.
- Network physical support intermediate understanding of replacements, upgrades, infrastructure installs, lifecycle refresh, assets tagging, vendor escorts, and capacity cabling & power management.
- Security physical support intermediate understanding of replacements, upgrades, infrastructure installs, lifecycle refresh, assets tagging, vendor escorts, and capacity cabling & power management.
Special Requirements
- Must have a valid California Driver's License to participate in the Pull Program and drive to UCDH buildings to support IT infrastructure through the health system portfolio.
- Must physically be able to lift infrastructure equipment weighing 50 pounds into computer racks, possibly working in confined spaces, with various degrees of temperatures within the data centers, or construction zones wearing a hard hat, hot aisle, cold aisle, above the ceiling, underfloor, outside, must be able to climb ladders, or physically be on their feet for long periods of time.
- Must be flexible with working hours including working days, swing, grave, weekends, holidays, occasional overtime, and during staff shortages (vacancies, sick leave, vacations, etc.)
- on-call on a rotational basis, may be subject to shift changes with minimal notice.
- This position may be subject to a criminal background investigation, drug screen, Live Scan fingerprinting, medical evaluation clearance, and functional capacity assessment.
