JOB SUMMARY
Under the direction of the Department of Athletics & Recreation Administration, the Scuba Instructor teaches all levels of scuba classes throughout the year. This position manages all aspects of the scuba program operations including planning, organizing and instructing recreational physical education scuba courses, supervising other scuba staff, budget management, risk management, maintaining scuba equipment, and completing associated policy and procedural tasks. Additionally, this person provides oversight of the Scuba Club, assisting in club outings, registration, risk management, and other duties as assigned.
This is a by agreement appointment (BYA) position.
APPOINTMENT INFORMATION
Salary Information: By Agreement. Salary Range: $75/hour - $150/hour. Salary commensurate with skills, qualifications and experience.

JOB DUTIES
60% - Teaching Scuba Classes (Fall, Winter, Spring)
- Teach 3-4 scuba classes each quarter.
- Develop, organize, and plan curriculum for classes.
- Demonstrate and teach techniques, skills and ethics necessary for students' success in the activity.
- Manage risks associated with conducting the activity.
15% - Instructor Supervision
- Supervise 1-2 other instructors who teach the same or closely related classes.
- Observe/participate in at least one class per year taught by supervised instructors.
- Directly provide constructive feedback for instructors' development and growth.
- Review final evaluations of supervised instructors, including highlighting and sharing accolades and areas for growth.
15% - Manage the Scuba Program
- Establish and enact a long-term vision for the sustainability and health of the scuba program, including building a balanced budget based on a viable scuba schedule.
- Manage and provide oversight of the daily functions, program schedules and maintenance of all scuba equipment.
- Act as advisor to Scuba Club.
- Supervise scuba volunteers.
- Serve as a member of the campus Diving Control Board.
10% - Teaching Administration
- Explain and administer waivers of liability to all class participants at the start of each quarter.
- Monitor AIS class lists during the first few weeks of the quarter and ensure all students are enrolled.
- Respond promptly to any administrative emails or requests for information from co-workers, supervisors, and administrators.
- Complete and submit course grades through AIS at the end of each quarter.
- Attend faculty meetings
- Provide counseling and resources to students who require extra assistance and interaction.
- Correspond regularly with students by email or phone to answer questions and supply class information.
REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS
- Bachelor's degree in related area and / or equivalent experience / training.
- NAUI Instructor
- Experience managing a large dive locker.
- Experience managing a high pressure compressed breathing air system with storage banks.
- Experience teaching Basic, Advance, Rescue and Divemaster courses in a synchronous, simultaneous format with class sizes up to 25 students.
- Experience using personal computers for word processing, spreadsheets and database management.
- Ability to work independently and establish priorities to complete tasks in a timely manner.
- Ability to interact effectively with diverse groups of people including faculty, staff, students, administrators, technicians and suppliers.
- Ability to teach safe use of a high pressure compressed breathing air system as well as field maintenance of SCUBA equipment.
- Ability to maintain accurate records and write concise reports using correct grammar and spelling.
- Willingness and ability to respond to off-hour emergencies.
- General knowledge of federal and state (OSHA, NAUI and UCSC) regulations as they apply to recreational diving and the management of a workspace (dive locker).
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS
- NAUI Instructor Trainer of Course Director - in order to continue to teach NAUI Instructor level courses.
- Certified high-pressure cylinder inspector and valve technician - in order to have cylinder inspections and valve servicing done in-house.
- Certified SCUBA equipment technician (MARES if possible) - in order to perform gear servicing and maintenance in-house.
- Extensive personal and professional experience in specific activity area.
- DAN Instructor.
SPECIAL CONDITIONS OF EMPLOYMENT
- Selected candidate will be required to pass a pre-employment criminal history background check.
- Ability to obtain and keep current CPR/AED/First Aid Certification throughout employment.
- Candidates must have the ability to work a flexible schedule.
- Will be required to complete Title IX (Sexual Harassment) training every two years.
- Will be required to take the Child Abuse and Neglect Reporting Act (CANRA) online training module.
- The University of California has implemented a COVID-19 Vaccination Policy covering all employees. To be compliant with the policy, covered employees must submit proof of vaccination or have an approved exception or deferral, eight (8) weeks from date of hire.
