Position Summary
Housing Facilities Services supports the Office of Housing Administration (OHA) which is responsible for planning, providing, and administrating housing services and facilities for over 8,000 students. This includes the operation of residence halls and apartments, off-campus housing and conferences. The OHA supports the educational mission of the Residential Education Office while providing the business operations for all housing related functions in support of a quality environment to enhance the student's educational experience. The OHA staff consists of approximately 25 employees and generates annual residence hall revenues exceeding $100,000,000.
The Building Service Engineer is a member of the Housing Facilities Services team. In conjunction with the Office of Housing Administration team, staff, and students, this position assists in carrying out the mission, vision, and values, of the Office of Housing Administration and Housing Facilities Services and is responsible for supporting and contributing to an atmosphere that facilitates respect, inclusivity, collaboration, and growth
Under general supervision, the Building Service Engineer is responsible for the maintenance of the residence hall facilities and associated mechanical equipment. Incumbent is responsible for working independently on a wide range of heating, ventilating, plumbing, electrical, mechanical, refrigeration, air conditioning, and water systems.
The Building Service Engineer must be proficient in using building automation systems to diagnose and troubleshoot HVAC and building mechanical problems; create accurate materials lists and procure all supplies to complete projects; maintain and service tools and equipment used in the performance of duties; perform all work in accordance with established safety procedures while maintaining a safe and clean work environment. The Building Service Engineer must maintain records and logs; retrieve and edit maintenance data using manual and/or computerized record-keeping systems; prepare standard reports; consult and work with other trades workers.
Work may involve exposure to hazardous materials and some positions will require EPA-approved certification in refrigerant recovery.

Full-time, permanent (probationary) position. This position is designated non-exempt under FLSA and is eligible for overtime compensation. Standard SDSU work hours are Monday-Friday, 8:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., but may vary based on operational needs.
This position is physically located at the SDSU Main Campus in San Diego.
Education and Experience
Journey level skill which normally would be acquired through two years of journey-level experience in the operation, maintenance and repair of boiler, heating, ventilating, refrigeration and air conditioning equipment and systems or the equivalent combination of formal course work in mechanical technology and hands-on experience.
Preferred Qualifications
-
Two years of experience maintaining water quality in closed-loop hydronic systems and cooling towers. -
Two years of experience operating a central plant, utilizing a central Building Automation System that maintained optimal building comfort while running central plant equipment at peak efficiency. -
Ability to coordinate activities with Housing Maintenance Services crew to provide reliable building services to all occupants. -
Ability to read and interpret equipment operating manuals, electrical, mechanical and plumbing schematics and building construction drawings.
Specialized Skills

Must have the ability to analyze and respond appropriately to emergency situations and to recognize, secure and report unsafe conditions immediately. -
Must have knowledge of safe working techniques and safety equipment and must be aware of the typical hazards of the workplace as well as the special hazards that may be encountered (biohazards, chemicals, asbestos/lead-containing materials). -
Must have the ability to understand and apply university and departmental policies and procedures.
Licenses and/or Certifications Required
Valid California Driver's License or the ability to obtain one within 10 days of hire.
Compensation and Benefits
Starting salary upon appointment is not expected to exceed $6,527 per month. Salary placement is determined by the education, experience, and qualifications the candidate brings to the position, internal equity, and the hiring department's fiscal resources.

CSU Classification Salary Range: $5,742 - $7,414 per month.
SDSU Vaccine Policy
In accordance with the California State University systemwide policy, students, faculty, and staff must be fully vaccinated against COVID-19 or provide a valid medical or religious exemption in order to access campus. An individual is considered fully vaccinated two weeks after their second dose of a two-shot vaccine or two weeks after the first dose of a single-shot vaccine. Afterward a COVID-19 booster is required to continue to be considered fully vaccinated.
The individual hired into this role will be required to submit their completed vaccination documentation to the university's secure online health portal prior to beginning work. Individuals with an approved medical or religious exemption on file with the university will be required to participate in SDSU's COVID-19 testing program.
