The Physics Department is a dynamic group comprised of instructional and research units and avariety of support programs and facilities. The Department consists of 23 permanent and 10 temporary faculty who teach and do research, 240 undergraduate physics majors, and between 70-85 graduate students working towards masters and Ph.D. degrees. The Department is also closely aligned with the researchers and faculty in the Santa Cruz Institute for Particle Physics (SCIPP) and the Astronomy and Astrophysics Department. The Physics Department staff are committed to providing excellent service to students, faculty and researchers.
NOTIFICATIONS

The Physics Department is a dynamic group comprised of instructional and research units and a variety of support programs and facilities. The Physics Department offers 20 lower division lab sections as well as 15 upper division lab sections per year, serving 2700 students.
The Department consists of 23 permanent and 10 temporary faculty who teach and do research, 240 undergraduate physics majors, and between 70-85 graduate students working towards masters and Ph.D. degrees. The Department is also closely aligned with the researchers and faculty in the Santa Cruz Institute for Particle Physics (SCIPP) and the Astronomy and Astrophysics Department. JOB SUMMARY
Reporting to the Physics Department Manager, and under the general direction of the instructor of record for each lab, the incumbent will provide logistic and technical support to the lower and upper division laboratory sections in the physics department. Responsibilities include preparing and organizing materials and equipment, analyzing, testing and writing experimental procedures, and maintaining order and cleanliness in the laboratories. This position also maintains, troubleshoots and repairs the laboratory equipment and instruments in all Physics labs.

JOB DUTIES
50% - Lab Preparation and Organization of Materials and Equipment for Lower Division Lab Classes
- With the assistance of student workers, set up and take down experiments on a weekly basis, including cleaning lab benches and equipment.
- Conduct daily inspections of instructional laboratory equipment and take appropriate remedial action.
- Test, calibrate, and perform minor repairs to laboratory instruments.
- Maintain equipment inventory and replenish as necessary.
- Design and construct new experimental apparatus.
- Set up and take down experiments on a quarterly basis.
20% - Lab Preparation and Organization of Materials and Equipment for Upper Division Lab Classes
- Conduct periodic inspections of instructional laboratory equipment and take appropriate remedial action.
- Test, calibrate, and perform minor repairs to laboratory instruments.
- Maintain equipment inventory and replenish as necessary.
- Test experimental procedures provided by instructors and suggest modifications as necessary.
20% - Analysis, Testing, and Performing of Lower Division Experiments
- Serve as a resource to students and teaching assistants when questions concerning equipment use and experimental protocols arise during open lab hours.
- Recommend equipment and curriculum improvements to the instructor of record.
- Supervise, train and evaluate student workers.
10% - Supervision and Enforcement of SafeConduct of Lower Division Laboratory Operations
- Notify students and instructors of the nature of any hazards in the lab and recommend appropriate safety procedures.
- Monitor and enforce laboratory safety.
REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS
- Knowledge of the general principles of physics as attained through coursework leading to a Master's degree or equivalent experience in physics or related discipline, and a more specialized knowledge of the principles of modern experimental physics.
- Excellent oral communication skills.
- Excellent written communication skills.
- Ability to interact effectively with a diverse group of faculty, staff, and students, and engage them in productive dialog regarding technical issues.
- Experience and analytical skills sufficient to plan, organize, and prioritize tasks to meet strict deadlines.
- Demonstrated proficiency in the laboratory skills associated with introductory physics laboratories.
- Experience maintaining, troubleshooting, and performing repairs of laboratory equipment, and a theoretical and practical knowledge of modern physics laboratory instrumentation.
- Experience with the safe operation of high voltage power supplies, radioactive materials, mechanical hazards, thermal hazards, and cryogenic hazards.
- Experience using hand tools, small power tools, and test equipment.
- Experience in the design and construction of scientific apparatus.
- Experience writing test procedures.
- Demonstrated ability to work quickly, accurately, and independently in a fast paced environment and to focus on tasks despite frequent interruptions.
- Experience working cooperatively as part of a team.
- Knowledge and experience in the use of electronic mail, word processing, and spreadsheets.
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS
- Experience as a laboratory technician where duties include direct responsibility for preparing laboratory experiments for college level courses in physics.
- Experience training, supervising, and evaluating the work of students or laboratory assistants.
- Experience procuring materials and equipment based on cost and serviceability and the analytical skills to determine whether an alternative product choice is adequate for the course curriculum.
SPECIAL CONDITIONS OF EMPLOYMENT
- Selected candidate will be required to pass a pre-employment criminal history background check.
- Ability to perform essential physical job functions.
- Ability to work in conditions of variable temperature/weather with possible exposure to strong, unpleasant odors, high levels of noise and vibrations, and exposure to dust and allergens.
- Ability to safely perform the physical requirements necessary in storing and moving materials. The ability to lift light to moderate objects up to 40 lbs., with or without accommodation.
- Will be required to work all scheduled hours on-site.
- Ability to work occasional evenings and weekends as directed.
- Selected candidate will be required to complete training within established time frames as directed including UC compliance training.
- Ability to work safely in areas where hazardous materials are present or stored.
- Ability to wear proper safety attire (long pants, closed-toe shoes, etc.) and personal protective equipment common in a laboratory setting.
- Ability to read signs and follow directions on labels that are written in English as well as ability to read and understand Material Safety Data Sheet (MSDS) and the proper use of chemical compounds.
