Position Description
The Department of Computational Media (https://engineering.ucsc.edu/departments/computational-media) at the University of California, Santa Cruz (UCSC) invites applications for up to a tenured associate professor in Human Computer Interaction. Candidates with evidence of demonstrated leadership experience in teaching, research, and service will also be considered at the assistant professor level. We seek outstanding applicants who have demonstrated research and teaching excellence in scientific, technical or design aspects of HCI to include: interaction design, user experience, human centered design, computational social science, humanistic and critical approaches to HCI, accessibility, computer-supported cooperative work and social media, human-AI interaction, and the design and evaluation of wearable, mobile, robotic, or ubiquitous systems. We are particularly interested in candidates who, through their work, demonstrate the university values of social justice and environmental sustainability. Though not required, industry experience, experience collaborating with industry, or teaching students in a professional masters program in HCI (or related discipline) will be considered as well. Applicants must show evidence of independent research with a high likelihood to be competitive for extramural grant support.
UC Santa Cruz values diversity, equity, and inclusion and is committed to hiring faculty who will work to advance these values. UC Santa Cruz is a Minority-serving Institution (MSI) with a high proportion of first-in-family students. To be considered, candidates must demonstrate an understanding of the barriers facing women, people of color, and other groups underrepresented in engineering, as well as describe their experience and future plans to promote equity and inclusion in teaching, mentoring, and research. Efforts supporting equity and inclusion at UC Santa Cruz will be recognized as important during the merit review and promotion process. The selected candidate will receive a start-up package that includes funding in support of furthering Diversity, Equity and Inclusion efforts.
The successful candidate is expected to enact a research program, advise PhD and MS students in their research area, obtain external funding, mentor junior faculty, develop and teach courses within the undergraduate and graduate curriculum, perform university, public, and professional service, and be able to work with students, faculty, and staff from a wide range of social and cultural backgrounds. The successful candidate will play a key role in research, teaching, and service with the Computational Media Department, interacting with its faculty, students, and staff. The primary office for this position is located in Santa Clara, due to the expectation of teaching and mentoring students in this location. Space for PhD students for this position is also located in Santa Clara. Graduate level teaching duties will be mainly at the Santa Clara campus with undergraduate courses to be taught at the Santa Cruz campus. The successful applicant will typically spend multiple days per week in Santa Clara and is also expected to spend on average one day per week on the Santa Cruz campus (more when teaching an undergraduate class on the Santa Cruz campus). The ability for on-demand transportation between Santa Clara and Santa Cruz with or without accommodations is essential.
The Computational Media Department emphasizes the design and construction of interactive technologies that make possible novel media experiences, while simultaneously embracing and engaging in theoretical and practical approaches from the arts, humanities, and social sciences. The department currently offers a BS in Computer Game Design, a Professional MS in Human Computer Interaction, a Professional MS in Games and Playable Media, a Professional MS in Serious Games and an MS, and PhD in Computational Media. The Computational Media Department has a long history of embracing groundbreaking interdisciplinary work. It is currently located within the Baskin School of Engineering at UC Santa Cruz as well as the Silicon Valley Campus. The UCSC Silicon Valley Campus is located in the heart of Silicon Valley, the worldwide epicenter for industry and innovation in interactive technology. The location affords extensive consulting opportunities and avenues for collaborative research with industry. Opened in 2016, the UCSC Silicon Valley Campus features contemporary interior design with multiple classrooms, computer labs, and project rooms, along with an event center and television studio.
UC Santa Cruz is a member of the Association of American Universities (AAU, an association of the top research universities in the US), a Hispanic-Serving Institution (HSI), a member of the Alliance of Hispanic-Serving Research Universities (HRSU), a member of the Computing Alliance of Hispanic Serving Institutions (CAHSI), an Asian American and Native American Pacific Islander-Serving Institution (AANAPISI), and a member of several identity and ethnic affinity professional societies. Broadening participation in engineering, and equitably and inclusively serving underrepresented minoritized students are key values at UC Santa Cruz.
Our campus is the nearest University of California campus to Silicon Valley and has close research ties with the local computer industry. Nestled in a redwood forest above the city of Santa Cruz, our beautiful campus has a long history of embracing groundbreaking interdisciplinary work. Our proximity to Silicon Valley, and our satellite campus there, afford opportunities and avenues for collaboration with researchers working in the many research and development labs in Silicon Valley, as well as with the other San Francisco Bay Area universities.
The chosen candidate will be expected to sign a statement representing that they are not the subject of any ongoing investigation or disciplinary proceeding at their current academic institution or place of employment, nor have they in the past ten years been formally disciplined at any academic institution/place of employment. In the event the candidate cannot make this representation, they will be expected to disclose in writing to the hiring Dean the circumstances surrounding any formal discipline that they have received, as well as any current or ongoing investigation or disciplinary process of which they are the subject.
