DEPARTMENT OVERVIEW
Physical Planning, Development & Operations (PPDO) manages and oversees all University activities and services related to physical and environmental planning, design and construction, engineering, physical plant maintenance and operations, capital planning and space management, and the associated business services necessary to support these functions. The University's main campus is spread across more than 2,000 acres and includes over 500 buildings comprising more than 8 million square feet. The department includes operating budgets of over $48 million, manages a capital project portfolio of approximately $500 million, and employs nearly 300 full time staff to carry forth the duties necessary for the campus' development and operation.

JOB SUMMARY
The Resource Recovery Operator C (Class C License), under the general supervision of the Resource Recovery Assistant Superintendent, will follow oral and written instructions while performing duties as part of the Grounds Resource Recovery operations. Duties include safely operating campus resource recovery vehicles for the completion of route pickups on a regular weekly schedule. The incumbent will work with or without the assistance of other staff. Acting in conjunction with the Resource Recovery Assistant Superintendent, the incumbent will fill out log sheets of materials collected and perform computer data entry as required. This position may also act as field lead providing instruction to student staff as needed. The Resource Recovery Operator C will be involved in helping to educate the campus community on various campus resource recovery procedures, but the primary focus will be on safe, courteous completion of collection routes on schedule.

JOB DUTIES
80% - Resource Recovery Route Driver / Collection
MATERIAL COLLECTION
Drive and operate trucks with lift gates, safely driving and operating in minimal access and crowded areas. Requires physically moving recycling bins at various sites for collection. Participate in route scheduling that services several hundred recycling and compost bins on campus and make route alterations as campus events require. Materials collected include but is not limited to: Mixed containers, various grades of paper, compost, Styrofoam, batteries, film plastic, mixed hard plastics, and food scraps. Operate two-way radio and / or cell phone to receive and send communications to supervisor, staff, the Work Order Desk and the Communication Center. Requires the flexibility to accommodate occasional shift alterations as requested by supervision.
PICK UP AND LOADING
Select and load the appropriate containers on a truck for efficient completion of route and transfer of resource recovery materials. Weigh all waste streams on truck scales and record weights. Properly position truck adjacent to bins for safe and efficient operation of lift gate and loading of materials. Load and properly secure materials for safe transportation.
TRANSPORTATION/UNLOADING
Deliver containers to locations on campus; Deliver materials to the appropriate drop-off sites on or off campus; Unload truck and sort materials as needed, using proper safety procedures; Inspect materials unloaded for contaminants and remove as needed to maintain good quality of recycled materials; Keep areas around collection containers clean and safe
SERVICING
Perform required daily inspection of vehicles including review of service checklist for visual safety inspection, fuel and oil, check fluids, and verify proper operation of all systems. Keep truck clean, and report any problems.
RECORDS
Prepare daily tally sheets by location of material collected, including material type and weight per stop, and other information as required. Daily record time worked by job, area, and work order.
CONTAINER MAINTENANCE
As required, pick up collection containers and transport for steam cleaning. Clean containers and replace. Replace labels on containers as needed. Deliver new and replacement containers as needed.
10% - Student Staff Supervision
Work with and assist in assigning tasks to student staff. Train new students and temporary staff members, describing and demonstrating safe collection procedures and the most efficient ways to accomplish resource recovery tasks; communicate general information on recycling commodities materials and quality control.
10% - Other duties as assigned
Assist Grounds Services in various tasks including special event preparation and clean-up, landscape maintenance and construction duties, refuse and equipment operation and general assistance in grounds maintenance activities.
REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS
- Demonstrated ability to operate and care for equipment and vehicles and report problems.
- Ability to learn about Resource Recovery issues and recycling operations on campus.
- Ability to work effectively with campus personnel and the campus community and the general public regarding grounds requests and questions.
- Ability to implement a customer service approach, with a commitment to high ethical standards.
- Ability to take initiative, organize, and perform work in various situations where numerous and diverse demands are involved.
- Ability to understand and incorporate the concepts of sustainability into daily work efforts.
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS
- Experience operating cargo trucks or delivery vehicles with lift gates; ability to diagnose equipment operational problems.
- Familiar with local and regional recycling and waste diversion programs.
- Experience with computers, their applications and data entry.
- Ability to provide training and oversight of student employee maintenance assistants.
SPECIAL CONDITIONS OF EMPLOYMENT
- Selected candidate will be required to pass a pre-employment criminal history background check.
- Must possess a valid license to drive in the state of California and be able to participate in the Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV) pull notice program.
- Interviewees will be required to provide a current DMV record.
- Ability to work in conditions of variable temperature/weather with possible exposure to strong, unpleasant odors, high levels of noise and vibrations, and exposure to dust and allergens.
- Ability to safely move materials weighing up to 150 lbs., using sound judgment to determine when assistance from others or the use of moving equipment is required, with or without accommodation.
- Ability to follow oral and written instructions specified in English.
