Departmental Overview
University Health Services (UHS) serves the campus by providing comprehensive campus-based health center providing fully accredited primary medical care, counseling and psychological services and innovative health promotion programs for students, faculty and staff. The UHS provides on-campus medical and mental health care and coordinates off-campus care through a network of community specialists and hospitals. Departments serving students include general medical, specialty and urgent care clinics, counseling and psychological services, laboratory, pharmacy, physical therapy, radiology and health promotion. Under the direction and the supervision of the Clinic Operations Supervisor, the Medical Assistant 1 supports clinicians and health care team members in providing for the needs of our patients and rendering the best possible care. Performance reflects a sound knowledge base pertinent to skill level in assigned clerical and administrative support duties, data collection, all aspects of patient care management, and completing assessments. Provides care for the comfort and well being of patients. May be assigned to various units in UHS.
Responsibilities
Clinic Reception
- Greets patients, verifies eligibility, accurately completes registration of patients using correct forms.
- Answers telephone and refers to appropriate personnel as required to meet patient needs: Takes clear and accurate messages.
- Schedules/reschedules patient appointments, using a computerized appointment system to maximize clinic efficiency.
- Demonstrates priority setting ability and organizational skills.
- Assists in maintaining smooth clinic operations and optimal patient flow: demonstrates initiative in carrying out duties.
- Directs or escorts patients as necessary. Assures that patients leaving the area have appropriate instructions, forms and referral information.
- Trains and orients new personnel as directed by CA Supervisor.
- Other duties as assigned.
Intake and Patient Care
- Obtains charts and documents appropriate health history and all patient interactions according to established guidelines.
- Takes temperature, pulse rate, blood pressure, and rooms patient as per unit guidelines. Documents findings and reports abnormal findings to RN.
- Assists clinicians with examinations and procedures, using sterile techniques if indicated.
- Instructs patients in specimen collection and performs specific testing as defined by assigned unit, i.e., checks visual acuity using Snellen chart, performs spirometry and urine dipstick, etc.
- Assists with wound care according to standards of the unit.
- Fits, applies ace wraps, splints, slings, crutches and instructs patients in use of the same.
- Reports, intervenes appropriately and documents unsafe conditions and/or adverse patient conditions. Completes incident reports as per UHS protocol.
- Room preparation, rooming and testing for COVID.
Clinic Maintenance and Supplies
- Demonstrates ability to use equipment correctly and safely.
- Keeps inventory of supplies and restocks in assigned areas, as needed, including patient education material.
- Informs purchasing department of stock needed as per guidelines.
- Unpacks and shelves goods received: must be able to lift supplies.
- Cleans rooms in the assigned area as per protocol.
- Process contaminated articles, prepares packs for sterilization, and sterilizes equipment as needed and per infection control guidelines.
Communication
- Respects and guards confidentiality of patients and other staff members.
- Demonstrates courteous and service-oriented behavior at all times when interacting with patients, families, and UHS staff.
- Anticipates interpersonal conflict and intervenes to promote resolution of conflict; deals with conflict on a one-to-one basis.
- Attends staff meetings and keeps abreast of current issues when not able to attend. Actively participates in discussion of problem identification and resolution.
- Requests and accepts constructive criticism.

- Respect the rights of others. Establishes effective working relationships with other members of the health care team, patients and families.
- Demonstrates flexibility; accepts assignment willingly or discusses concerns with Clinic Manager.

- Demonstrates knowledge of and applies safety principles as identified by UHS.

- Demonstrates punctuality to work and required meetings. Maintains attendance and follows call-in policy as per UHS guidelines.
Perform other duties as assigned by the supervisor.
Required Qualifications
- Graduation from high school [or GED] and minimum of one year of appropriate experience; or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
- Current Medical Assistant certification.
- Skills, knowledges and abilities essential to the successful performance of the duties assigned to the position including:
- Minimum of 6-12 months in a high volume medical setting that includes medical assisting and medical receptionistduties and appointment making.
- Knowledge and experience using computer skills, medical terminology and experience with basic medical charting;knowledge of electronic medical records.
- Ability to organize, coordinate and complete projects effectively and within deadlines.
- Well-developed people skills and the ability to remain calm under pressure; demonstrated sensitivity to enthnic, culture and lifestyle diversity.
- Excellent customer service skills.
Preferred Qualifications
- CPT certification
- Ability to work weekends if needed.
Salary & Benefits
- This is a per diem position with variable hours.
- The per diem hourly rate for this position is $30.07.
- Per diem positions are not eligible for the UC benefits plan.

- Your employment is dependent on obtaining and maintaining a credentialing clearance (if applicable), background clearance and medical clearance according to University Health Service policies.
- This position is governed by the terms and conditions in the agreement for the Patient Care Technical Unit (EX) between the University of California and the American Federation of State, County and Municipal Employees (AFSCME).
