The Rocks and Geomaterials Laboratory (RGL) in the Department of Geological Sciences is seeking a Laboratory Manager to join our interdisciplinary team of engineers and scientists. Research in the RGL laboratory focuses on the acoustic and mechanical characterization of rocks and geomaterials for applications in fluid injection and storage in the Earth's underground, energy sources, and manufacturing processes, among others. Responsibilities for this position include supporting the faculty/PI in maintaining laboratory protocols, actively monitoring and facilitating the day-to-day operations of the laboratory, and securing research funding. Maintaining and facilitating laboratory operations will include inventory management, purchasing general laboratory supplies, and coordinating with Stanford Environmental Health & Safety. The role also includes supporting student and postdoctoral researchers in laboratory techniques and skills, including but not limited to the characterization of physical and mechanical properties. Prior experience with rocks and materials characterization is preferred but not required. The successful candidate will be able to conduct experiments independently and collaboratively within our team, under the supervision of the PI. Because the RGL interacts with a team of graduate and postdoctoral researchers, the successful candidate must have good interpersonal skills, be a team player, and have the ability to communicate scientific concepts clearly.

YOUR RESPONSIBILITIES WILL INCLUDE*:

Oversee the daily activities of the laboratory including maintenance; maintain laboratory stock, manage chemical inventory and safety records, and provide general laboratory support as needed. Purchasing laboratory supplies and equipment under minimal supervision of principal investigator or financial manager;
Work with health and safety department to ensure the laboratory complies with regulations and all required trainings;
Assist the PI with new research proposals and applications for funding and grants;
Supervise (either formally or informally) students as needed, including oversight and direction on techniques, as well as consultation on project work
Support and improve students' learning experience: Work strategically with the faculty/PI to improve educational experiences of students by researching and testing better ways to use apparatus/a to study basic Rock Physics concepts and make measurements;
Manage the experimental equipment collection: Inspect, maintain and repair existing equipment as needed, ensure that apparatus operates properly prior to student use, identify problems or malfunctions with apparatus and replace or repair as necessary, keep current on advances in technology and propose updates, revisions or replacements to equipment or methods of use.
Make recommendations on experimental design and/or research direction to principal investigator;
Independently conduct laboratory experiments to gather data for a portion of a major research project, including interpreting and analyzing results;
Develop new research protocols where modification or adaptation of standard procedures and protocols is required;
Perform ongoing literature review to remain current with new procedures and related research; apply to ongoing research and development of new protocols.
Contribute to the preparation of papers for publication, especially in the results section, and to publication of findings;

To be successful in this position, you will need:

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS:

EDUCATION & EXPERIENCE:

Bachelor's degree and four years of experience in related scientific field, or combination of education and relevant experience.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

Extensive experience applying multidisciplinary scientific principles and practices to perform experimental design and coordinate laboratory activity.
In-depth understanding and experience with analysis and interpretation of research data, and ability to recognize and resolve irregularities and invalid results.
Demonstrated experience with and ability to organize data and develop models allowing for integration and display of data.
Extensive experience with scientific software applications, acoustic sensors, and high pressure/high temperature systems, or programs relevant for the job.
Ability to provide technical leadership and coordinate major installation, materials, tooling, supplies, and scheduling of work crews; ability to work with scientific or research staff in developing/supporting technical procedures.
Ability to communicate effectively, both verbally and in writing and to contribute to development of research plan.

STRONGLY PREFERRED EDUCATION & EXPERIENCE:

PhD or MSc in Physics, Geophysics, Rock Mechanics, and Civil Engineering or related field with advanced experience in laboratory management.

Comprehensive understanding of scientific principles.
Proven project management skills and demonstrated ability to complete detailed work accurately.
Mentorship experience and strong interpersonal and collaboration skills.
Ability to work under deadlines with general guidance is essential.
Ability to communicate in a proficient way with scientific concepts both verbally and in writing.
Comprehensive understanding of scientific principles.
General computer skills, experience with databases and scientific applications, and ability to quickly learn and master computer programs.
LabView Expert and strong programming skills with Python.
Experience in managing laboratories in basic science, machine shop and/or electronics design/construction/troubleshooting experience.
Strong analytical skills and excellent judgment.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS*:

Frequently stand, walk, twist, bend, stoop, squat, grasp lightly, use fine manipulation, grasp forcefully, perform desk-based computer tasks, use telephone, write by hand, lift, carry, push and pull objects weighing over 40 pounds.
Occasionally sit, kneel, crawl, reach and work above shoulders, sort and file paperwork or parts.
Rarely climb, scrub, sweep, mop, chop and mix or operate hand and foot controls.
Must have correctible vision to perform duties of the job.
Ability to bend, squat, kneel, stand, reach above shoulder level, and move on hard surfaces for up to eight hours.
Ability to lift heavy objects weighing up to 50 pounds.
Ability to work in a dusty, dirty, and odorous environment.
