DEPARTMENT OVERVIEW
The Department of Performance, Play & Design (PPD) is a multi-disciplinary, academic unit of the University of California Santa Cruz. It houses three degree-granting programs in Theater Arts, Dance, and Games & Playable Media. As part of the curriculum, the Department supports productions of plays, dance concerts, and other performances and installations.

JOB SUMMARY
Under supervision of the Costume Shop Manager, the Costume Shop Assistant responsibilities will include: construction of costumes using skilled pattern making techniques; performing tailoring and dressmaking tasks; performing costume craft and other assigned projects using independent
judgment and ingenuity.
When requested, incumbent will supervise and assist students and student staff as they construct costumes, perform shop maintenance and execute wardrobe preparation assignments for productions.
APPOINTMENT INFORMATION
Budgeted Salary: $22.17 - $24.14 / Hourly. Salary commensurate with skills, qualifications and experience.
Under California law, the University of California, Santa Cruz is required to provide a reasonable estimate of the compensation range for this role and should not offer a salary above the posted range. The salary shown above is the budgeted range the University reasonably expects to pay.

JOB DUTIES
50% - Sew and Construct Costumes for PPD Productions & Events
- Fabricate Patterns (either by draping or flat pattern making) for specific actors. Determine yardage for fabrics and trim for assigned costume projects. Cut or supervise cutting of fabric for costumes from patterns. Conduct fittings for said costumes.
20% - Alter Costumes and Correct Patterns
- Advise students on project work. Provide Costume Shop Manager with assistance assigning and completing daily notes (production and shop work) as requested.
10% - Assist Costume Shop Manager with Supervision of Student Costume Shop Crew
- Advise students on project work. Provide Costume Shop Manager with assistance assigning and completing daily notes (production and shop work) as requested.
10% - Assist with Maintaining Costume Stock, Storage & Shop Facilities
- Provide support with organizing the costume storage facility and maintaining stock costume placement. Assist Costume Shop Manager in maintaining stock costume database and updating shop labels in costumes as requested. When requested, fill out paperwork on costume loans and returns (to companies with shared use agreements). Restore old and worn costumes as requested by Costume Shop Manager.
5% - Assist with Wardrobe Needs, Maintaining Shop Supplies & Maintenance Projects
- Assist with support in wardrobe facility preparations for productions throughout the year. When requested, provide support on shop maintenance projects when production work allows.
5% - Maintain Personal Work Area & Professional Development
- Maintain both construction and computer workspace that is safe and orderly for both self and other shop personnel. Actively pursue opportunities to advance personal and professional knowledge relevant to the profession. Maintain familiarity with current technologies applicable to administrative systems. Undergo professional development, especially in the area of DEI, as appropriate.
REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS
- Demonstrated commitment to embracing diversity in all its forms and striving for an inclusive community that fosters an open, enlightened, and productive environment.
- Experience working with LGBTQ+ communities and working with people of diverse social, economic, and ethnic backgrounds, and varying levels of physical ability.
- Excellent Sewing Ability. Both machine sewing and hand finishing, with a particular specialty in costuming.
- Ability to construct all manner of costumes from designer sketches.
- Mathematical skills sufficient to alter and draft patterns.
- Proven ability to work quickly under pressure of deadlines.
- Clear communication skills.
- Experience sewing for theater productions.
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS
- Experience working with undergraduate college students.
- Ability to perform wardrobe maintenance.
- Ability to recognize and complete shop maintenance projects.
SPECIAL CONDITIONS OF EMPLOYMENT
- Selected candidate will be required to pass a pre-employment criminal history background check.
- Must possess a valid license to drive in the state of California.
- Ability to work long periods of time at a computer with or without accommodation.
- Ability to perform essential physical job functions.
- The ability to ascend/descend ladders with or without accommodation.
- Ability to safely perform the physical requirements necessary in storing and moving materials. The ability to lift light to moderate objects up to 40 lbs., with or without accommodation.

- Ability to travel to multiple work locations on and off campus.
