DEPARTMENT OVERVIEW
Physical Planning, Development & Operations manages and oversees all University activities and services related to real estate, physical and environmental planning, design and construction, engineering, physical plant maintenance and operations, and the associated business services necessary to support these functions. The University's main campus is spread across more than 2,000 acres and includes over 500 buildings comprising more than 8 million square feet. The department includes an operating budgets of over $48 million, manages a capital project portfolio in excess of $350 million, and employs nearly 300 full time staff to carry forth the duties necessary for the campus' development and operation.

JOB SUMMARY
Under the supervision of the Assistant Superintendent of Specialty Crews, the incumbent oversees the irrigation systems and scheduling controls for all landscape areas under the purview of Grounds Services. The incumbent oversees the central control irrigation system and is responsible for programming, hardware and software management, and interactions with manufacturer technical support team to correct any problems. The incumbent also oversees irrigation schedules adaptively for approximately 70 + stand-alone irrigation controllers campus wide based on local evapotranspiration data, weather forecasts, special events, field conditions and irrigation system hardware specifications. The incumbent oversees water conservation for irrigation usage in Grounds Services areas of responsibility. Attends project meetings and monitors ongoing landscape projects. Designs irrigation systems for projects when needed. Assists in review of capital construction plans and comments on specifications specific to campus standards. Conducts field inspections of new capital project irrigation installations and documents deficiencies. The incumbent leads team of Irrigation Specialists and student labor to carry out assigned tasks; makes field decisions regarding problem situations or complications encountered. Communicates work order revisions, material delays or other problems to Assistant Superintendent of Specialty Crews. Maintains planned maintenance and material records for own work as well as Irrigation Specialist and performs the full range of job duties as outlined in the series concept. The incumbent oversees and maintains, inspects, installs, services, designs, modifies and repairs campus irrigation systems, including pressurized main lines (up to 6 inches) made of various materials such as Transite, PVC, galvanized pipe, etc.; manual systems, laterals and valves, and all aspects of automatic systems, including athletic fields, college and building landscape areas. Investigates, excavates and corrects problems such as leaks, broken pipes, improperly connected fittings, damaged materials, malfunctioning equipment, etc.; adjusts controllers, valves and the heads to ensure correct coverage and precipitation rates. Periodically operates and inspects remote control systems. Installs new systems including controller wires, pipe valve and sprinkler heads; relocates main line quick coupler valves and sprinkler heads. The incumbent oversees, conducts and documents annual planned maintenance for all irrigation systems on campus: Identifies major deficiencies, correct minor deficiencies, records findings and plans corrective action.

JOB DUTIES
55% - Irrigation System Maintenance and Repair
Maintains, inspects, installs, services, designs, modifies and repairs campus irrigation systems, including pressurized main lines (up to 6 inches) made of various materials such as Transite, PVC, galvanized pipe, etc.; manual systems, laterals and valves and all aspects of automatic systems including athletic fields, college and building landscape areas. Investigates, excavates, and corrects problems such as leaks, broken pipes, improperly connected fittings, damaged materials, malfunctioning equipment, etc.; adjusts controllers, valves and heads to ensure correct coverage and precipitation rates. Periodically operates and inspects remote control systems. Installs new systems including controller wires, pipe valve and sprinkler heads; relocates main line quick coupler valves and sprinkler heads.
15% - Lead Duties
Gives instruction to Irrigation Specialist and student labor to carry out assigned tasks; makes field decisions regarding problem situations or complications encountered. Communicates work order revisions, material delays or other problems to Senior Superintendent. Maintains Planned Maintenance and material records for own work as well as Irrigation Specialist and perform the full range of job duties as outlined in the series concept.
10% - Procurement
Generates purchase requests for repairs, parts, and material supplies. Tracks and records material usage for individual jobs and restocks truck supply. Compiles job material use and prepares monthly reports. Maintains time records and job-related accounting for various accounting funds.
10% - Planned Maintenance
Conducts and documents annual planned maintenance for all irrigation systems on campus: Identify major deficiencies, correct minor deficiencies, record findings on work order and hand in paperwork. Keeps records of irrigation system inspection and oversees inspection records completed by Irrigation Specialist.
5% - Sustainability
Adheres to UC sustainability policies.
5% - Additional Duties
All other duties as assigned.
REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS
- Knowledge of irrigation auditing methods and schedule optimization.
- Knowledge of irrigation software and programming of irrigation systems.
- Knowledge of older and current irrigation system hardware and materials.
- Experience and knowledge of the design and construction of complete irrigation systems.
- Knowledge, ability and experience with mechanical, electrical and plumbing machinery, including electronic fault and pipe locators, power pipe threaders, multitesters, power saws, generators, compressors, etc.
- Ability and experience in reading and working from landscape, mechanical, electrical and architectural blueprints.
- Knowledge of State and local codes regarding backflow devices, pipe requirements, etc. in the installation of new sprinkler systems and the renovation of old systems not conforming to code.
- Knowledge of the water requirements of landscape planting and lawns.
- Knowledge of water holding properties of soil types and the concepts of evapotranspiration
- Knowledge of and experience with solid state controllers and systems.
- Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with those within PPDO and other individuals within the University as necessary to successfully conduct assigned tasks and work.
- Ability to incorporate the concepts of sustainability into daily work efforts
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS
- Certified Landscape Irrigation Auditor certification through Irrigation Association
- Certified Landscape Water Managers certification through Irrigation Association
- Experience with Smart irrigation controllers such as: Calsense, Rain Master, Hunter
SPECIAL CONDITIONS OF EMPLOYMENT
- Selected candidate will be required to pass a pre-employment criminal history background check.
- Must possess a valid license to drive in the state of California.
- Ability to successfully work with and around a variety of fertilizers, insecticides and herbicides.
- Ability to perform grounds keeping duties outdoors through all seasons of weather in developed and undeveloped environments.
- Ability to safely perform the physical requirements necessary in storing and moving materials. The ability to lift light to moderate objects up to 40 lbs., with or without accommodation.
- Ability to travel within a defined regional or service area.
