About the Job
The Director of Pre-Health Advising is a full-time career position reporting directly to the Dean of Natural Sciences and indirectly to the Assistant Dean for Undergraduate Medical Education. UC Merced is embarking on an ambitious collaboration with the UCSF School of Medicine to establish medical education through a BS/MD pathway. This highly visible effort reflects UC Merced's long-standing commitment to bringing healthcare to the region and presents the opportunity to refresh and intensify advising in support of all health-related professions.
The Director of Pre-Health Advising will develop and lead a team of professionals in expanding and delivering effective programming to and advising our diverse study body from a holistic and asset-based perspective. The office of Pre-Health Advising delivers academic advising to BS/MD students and works closely with the offices of Assessment and Undergraduate Medical Education to monitor their progress through their BS degrees. The office of Pre-Health Advising, in collaboration with School and freshman advising units, also supports all students from across the campus as they explore career options, make plans, complete pre-requisite coursework, access mentoring and coaching, gain community and clinical observation experience, and study for standardized exams required by most professional health programs (e.g., MCAT, DAT, PCAT, PA-CAT, etc.). In all cases, the PreHealth Advising office guides students from their initial exploration of healthcare careers through the professional school application process.
The Director of Pre-Health Advising will be a partner in identifying the current and future needs of pre-health students, stay abreast of peer-reviewed literature documenting positive developments in pre-health advising, develop new approaches to planning and administration of Pre-health Advising services, and help to define and implement institutional goals in the pre-health and medical fields.
