JOB SUMMARY
Reserves & Media is a unit within the User Services & Resource Sharing (US&RS) department. Under the direction of the Reserves & Media Coordinator, the main responsibilities of this position are to:

JOB DUTIES
50% - Reserves & Media Operational Responsibilities
- Accept and process book and media reserve lists (perform thorough bibliographic searches for items that need to be purchased, using several automated systems, such as CDL/Melvyl, Primo, BIP, etc.). Explain Copyright policy and ensure copyright compliance of material being placed on hard copy reserve. Collect and assess book and media reserve statistics for future planning. Plan and execute Reserves & Media Desk outreach.
- Hire, train, schedule, monitor, and evaluate Media Desk student employees. Work with other US&RS units to align best practices for student work in the department.
- Maintain public Reserves and Media Desk information, including web pages and hardcopy materials. Create training materials for Reserves and the Media Desk.
25% - Administrative Responsibilities
- Under the direction of the Reserves & Media Coordinator and in collaboration with team members, design, evaluate, research, recommend, and implement changes or improvements to existing services, work tools, or procedures and policies necessitated by a changing internal and external environment.
- Serve as the point of contact for the Digital Scholarship Commons (DSC) department. Coordinate with Digital Scholarship Commons staff on projects and on student staff training opportunities related to the DSC.
- Share the coordination of establishing Reserves & Media Desk work quality standards and guidelines.
- Identify inefficiencies in workflows and procedures and make recommendations to resolve. Communicate changes to Reserves & Media Unit Head and other identified parties. Follow team's procedure for consistently evaluating and documenting decisions about workflow.
- Determine daily work priorities; assess need for redistribution and implement changes as needed in consultation with team members.
- Follow agreed upon process for communicating changes in Reserves & Media services to the library, the campus, and patrons.
20% - Public Service Desk Responsibilities
- Check materials in and out, place holds, recalls, and searches; renew materials both in person and on the phone; assign barcodes to materials that have never been checked out by creating item records; answer phone; assign barcodes to materials that have never been checked out by creating item records; answer phones, transfer calls and take messages; issue and update library cards to all patron categories; accept materials for reserves processing.
- Assist patrons in-person at multiple public service points and virtually through email and synchronous chat. Inform patrons of library policies and demonstrate basic research methods; teach patrons how to locate materials within the local collection and teach patrons how to look up reserve materials; demonstrate placing of Interlibrary Loan requests; show patrons how to access their Interlibrary Loan accounts; identify and refer complex requests.
- Maintain confidentiality as required by Library, University, and system-wide policy.
- Printing and scanning: describe printing and scanning options to patrons, provide basic troubleshooting of ITS-managed equipment, and direct unresolved issues to ITS as needed. Provide patron education and support for microfilm readers and scanner.
- Use independent judgment in determining the need for additional assistance in resolving difficult or unsafe situations. Execute emergency procedures when necessary as outlined in the Library Emergency manual.
5% - Miscellaneous/committees
- Participate in US&RS department meetings and as appropriate attend Circulation, Collection Maintenance, Interlibrary Loan, and Reserves/Media unit meetings. Seek out and participate in recommended professional development opportunities. Participate in unit-wide initiatives. Assisting other units as necessary and participation in ad-hoc special projects as assigned.
REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS
- Understanding of the ways that racism, ableism, and sexism appear in work environments; interest in fostering an inclusive environment that supports a sense of belonging.
- Experience working with a library management system or in library processing workflows, such as reserves, interlibrary loan, acquisitions, electronic resources management or similar library workflows.
- Demonstrated skill in organizing, monitoring, and setting priorities for a heavy workload with multiple tasks and competing deadlines.
- Communication and interpersonal skills sufficient to work productively with library staff, student assistants, and patrons from culturally diverse backgrounds.
- Demonstrated success working in a collaborative, team-based work environment.
- Applies careful attention to tasks; understands the underlying principles in complex detail.
- Experience directing the work of others.
- Ability to give, receive, evaluate, and apply constructive feedback.
- Ability to continually assess work-flow processes with an eye toward efficiency and best practices.
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS
- Experience using Ex Libris Alma or similar library management systems.
- Experience with Course Reserves and Circulation practice, policy, and software management tools.
SPECIAL CONDITIONS OF EMPLOYMENT
- Selected candidate will be required to pass a pre-employment criminal history background check.
- Ability to work a non-standard schedule including nights and weekends. Academic year includes a Tuesday - Saturday schedule, with some evening shifts.
- Ability to move materials up to 50 lbs. with or without accommodation.
- Ability to perform essential physical job functions requiring bending, lifting, stretching, and pushing/pulling.
- Ability to work long periods of time at a computer with or without accommodation.
