Position description
The Department of Plant and Microbial Biology (PMB) at the University of California, Berkeley (UCB) seeks applications for an appointee in the Project Scientist Series (Associate to Full rank) in the Luan Lab, in the areas of plant genomics and biology.
The appointee will collaborate with other lab members to develop and analyze appropriate populations of wheat plants or employ integrating association genetics with target gene enrichment sequencing to identify gene candidates for insect resistance trait, which will be validated by functional complementation assay and gene editing applied to CRISPR/Cas9 system.
The appointee's role in the lab will include work on collaborative project(s) to identify and characterize economically important genes and their impact on grain yield, nutrient use efficiency, resistance to insects (including the Hessian fly and greenbug), with the goal of wheat improvement, specifically from wheat D-genome progenitor Aegilops Tauschii.
The position will also work to further investigate the function of identified genes in controlling grain yield and nutrient uptake, and the molecular mechanism of the relationship between insect resistance and grain yield. Additional areas of focus will be to develop a new PCR technique that targets large DNA fragments with complex secondary structures, advance the performance of Agrobacterium-mediated wheat transformation and gene editing platform, and contribute to the preparation of manuscripts for publication.
