Departmental Overview
Berkeley Engineering is among the top three engineering schools in the United States, and is the second largest college at UC Berkeley. The Department of Bioengineering, established in 1998, is the newest Department in the College of Engineering (COE) and boasts the fastest growing and most competitive undergraduate COE major. BioE is home to 19 core and 11 joint faculty.
Built in 1907 and closed in 1998 for renovation, the Hearst Memorial Mining building reopened its doors in September 2002 as UC Berkeley's state-of-the-art home to the Department of Materials Science & Engineering and all of its laboratories and administration areas. There are also Bioengineering, Electrical Engineering & Computer Science, and Civil & Environmental Engineering laboratories located in HMMB as well with a total of 23 laboratories in all.
This role involves managing the design and construction of capital projects, including renovations, expansions and new facilities and infrastructure as well as landscape projects; collect, develop, and analyze technical data to determine project requirements and preparation of information regarding specifications, materials, equipment, estimated costs, and completion times. The incumbent is also the sole technical administrator for hardware, software operating systems and network management for Bioengineering faculty, staff and student constituents. This position provides technical and business systems support for all activities related to desktop computer systems, networks and related peripherals requiring a professional, desktop systems, applications software and hardware. Includes installation, configuration, testing of hardware and software components; ensures integrity and reliability of systems through security safeguards, upgrades and patches. Monitors systems for optimal performance and load balancing in a networked environment and is knowledgeable on supported campus protocols and security issues. Recommends hardware and software solutions, including new acquisitions and upgrades. Participates in development of information technology and infrastructure projects. Diagnoses inquiries as they relate to maintenance of computers, application systems, and related technology. The incumbent's role in facilitating communications through the use of information technology is essential to functioning in the multidisciplinary, two-campus BioE environment.

Responsibilities
70% Hearst Memorial Mining Building Facilities/Project Manager-College of Engineering (COE)
- Meets with clients to help define project scope and program, reviews cost estimates, establishes project schedule and budget and reviews with clients for approval.
- Prepare change order requests, and punch list, and acts as liaison among project participants, resolving problems or conflicts and ensures project is properly closed
- Monitor the Energy Management System (EMS) for HMMB and report any building operation problems to PPCS.
- Coordinates, monitors and tracks all maintenance, custodial, grounds, and other service requests of Physical Plant Campus Services as well as other outside vendors or organizations for assigned facilities, including tracking completion of maintenance work and the ongoing status of individual service requests.
- Serve as primary contact between all occupants in the building including faculty, staff scientists, grad students, post docs and staff for repairs, preventive, deferred and custodial maintenance.
- Works with management to coordinate and manage capital improvement projects with Capital Projects and actively participates on committees and/or meetings concerning capital improvements to departmental facilities. Works with onsite contractors and other vendors to coordinate work schedules, facilitate emergency access, and track progress of work.
- Serve as 'Department Access Key Controller' to issue keys (approximately 500 keys in circulation), order replacement keys as needed, and manage the petty cash system for key deposits. Similarly, manage electronic card key access (approximately 475 ID cards currently active)
- Conducts regular periodic rounds to inspect areas for security, fire and accident hazards and takes appropriate action as required, including reporting infractions of fire and building codes, building rules and other building irregularities to management.
- Oversee 290 HMMB conference room, HMMB Lobby and HMMB Circle reservations and assisting with meeting setups and A/V assistance.
- Attend workshops and trainings to receive the latest and most up to date information about safety, ergonomics and code requirements.
- Facilitate ordering and installation of furniture, white boards, book cases, carpeting, painting, non-routine custodial services for faculty and staff offices.
- Create a new building emergency evacuation plan for HMMB with door monitors.
- Report any issues with building equipment needed for day to day operation to the supervisor. Coordinate the upgrade or installation of new equipment (i.e.: a new ventilation system, or a new chiller).
10% Department Safety Coordinator - Bioengineering
- Conduct quarterly HMMB building safety committee meetings.
- Implement safety program within the department. Ensure compliance with the Injury and Illness Prevention Program (IIPP).
- Perform computer workstation evaluations, office self-inspections, and make recommendations for ergonomic improvements.
- Attend workshops and trainings to receive the latest and most up to date information about safety and ergronomics.
- Serve as Department liaison with EH&S; ensure annual completion of chemical inventory and self-inspections for Bioengineering labs and staff offices.
- Serve as Department representative on the Stanley Hall and Energy Biosciences Safety Committee.
10% Facilities Support -Bioengineering
- Serve as departmental equipment custodian. Maintain equipment inventory and record changes in BETS (Berkeley Equipment Tracking System). Locate equipment with missing property tags and tag as appropriate.
- Serve as liaison between the Bioengineering faculty and staff on the 5th floor of the Engineering Biosciences Building and its facilities manager.
- Consult users and facilitate installations/changes/additions for furniture, data, and phone connections in the Energy Biosciences Building.
- Facilitate ordering and installation of furniture, white boards, book cases, carpeting, painting, non-routine custodial services for faculty and staff offices in any Bioengineering space.
10% IT Infrastructure maintenance - Bioengineering
- Participates in all planning functions related to the department's IT infrastructure, including proposing system configurations for all staff workstations. Makes recommendations for software, servers and other enhancements to improve program communications.
- Function as sole provider of technical support for all bioengineering workstations and the bioengineering network, including the Bioengineering computers in HMMB.
- Provide hands-on hardware and software support, including installation, troubleshooting, upgrades and repairs for servers, workstations, laptops, printers and other computing equipment for department staff and faculty.
- Proposes and implements system enhancements (software and hardware updates) that will improve the performance and reliability of the system.
- Executes security controls to prevent hackers from infiltrating campus information stored on workstations and servers.
- Serve as CNS security contact to resolve security breaches and blocks on the Bioengineering subnet. Continuously monitor internal and external security bulletins and updates and take action to maintain workstation and network security and standards.
- Serve as Cal Net deputy for department and perform the initial setup of Cal Net IDs, password changes and resets for faculty and staff.
- Manage IP addresses (approx. 150); request new IPs as needed.
- Manage software use and licenses for department faculty and staff (approx. 100).
- Maintain backup system for Bioengineering file server.
- Manage all email aliases for various department purposes, including staff, student and faculty aliases (includes approximately 24 lists ranging in size from a dozen to over 400 addresses).
- Manage the BioE container in Active Directory which includes creating new users and computers and setting file permissions.
Required Qualifications
- Bachelors degree in related area and/or equivalent experience/training.
- Thorough working knowledge of building and construction, design, construction contract administration and California Building Codes, including full understanding of industry practices.
- Thorough project management skills, including skill to manage complex projects.
- Thorough knowledge of the campus, including its infrastructure and short and long range strategic building plans.
- Thorough skills in problem recognition/avoidance/resolution.
- Thorough organizational and analytical skills including skill to provide high quality control.
- Thorough written, verbal and interpersonal communications skills including high level political acumen.

Under California law, the University of California, Berkeley is required to provide a reasonable estimate of the compensation range for this role and should not offer a salary outside of the range posted in this job announcement. This range takes into account the wide range of factors that are considered in making compensation decisions including but not limited to experience, skills, knowledge, abilities, education, licensure and certifications, analysis of internal equity, and other business and organizational needs. It is not typical for an individual to be offered a salary at or near the top of the range for a position. Salary offers are determined based on final candidate qualifications and experience.
The budgeted salary that the University reasonably expects to pay for this position is $82,400 to $116,900 annually. This is a 100% FTE career position eligible for full benefits.
