Design Communication I:
This beginning course focuses on basic freehand drawing and drafting. All the components essential to good drawing are presented and discussed. Working mainly in black-and-white, students embark on a series of exercises that introduce the basics of measured orthographic drawing, as well as perspective drawing, enhanced by composition and design, contour and line, proportion and scale, plan and section, form and space, tone and shadows. This class is based on the U.S. standard measurements of feet and inches and not the international metric system. Media covered include a variety of sketching and drafting tools.
Design Communication II:
This course builds on the skills learned in DC I as it introduces the student to the use of line drawings as a medium for communicating more sophisticated design concepts. Beginning with the interrelationships of architectural plan, section, and elevation, the course proceeds to explore the full range of constructed line drawings, including axonometric, one and two point perspective. This course uses U.S. standard basic units of length (inch, foot, yard, etc.), not the international metric system. Two conceptual design projects help develop skills in communicating design ideas.
