Departmental Overview
The Space Sciences Laboratory (SSL) is the UC system's premier space sciences research facility and one of the preeminent university laboratories in the country for space research. SSL's primary goals of fostering outstanding research in space-related sciences and providing education for the next generation of space scientists. Research at SSL is led by Berkeley faculty and SSL Senior Fellows, and focuses on experiments and observations carried out in space, but also includes research with the potential of leading to future space experiments, and the theoretical research that is tied into the experimental and observational programs. Since its inception in 1959, SSL has participated in over 50 NASA space science missions, including the Apollo, Mars, and Explorer programs, as well as many international space missions.
Assignment will be as a key team member of the Instrument Control Package (ICP) team. The ICP is a critical embedded system for multiple, ongoing, Space Sciences Laboratory missions. It provides power, data, control, and protection for scientific payloads and instruments. The ICP team is comprised of a range of EEs covering digital, analog, power, andelectrical systems skill sets.

Responsibilities
- Designs, tests, manages, and maintains complex electronics and electrical products, starting with requirements and supporting them through integration with the spacecraft.
- Plans, organizes, and supervises lower level engineers and technical staff engaged in the design, construction, and testing of space flight hardware and instruments.
- Consults and collaborates with entities outside of the immediate project team: Principal Investigators (PIs), shop personnel, vendors, and other component engineers
- Carries system engineering responsibility regarding electrical and electronics development at the instrument level. Provides information and advice to instrument systems engineers and management as part of the development process.
Required Qualifications
- Effective interpersonal and communication skills in order to work with both technical and non-technical personnel at various levels in the organization.
- Able to work independently and as part of a team, able to learn quickly, meet deadlines, and demonstrate problem-solving skills.
- Able to follow procedures, requirements, and guidelines required by NASA and the project.
- Experience operating test equipment related to embedded systems: DMMs, oscilloscopes, logic analyzers, etc.
- Able to read and understand electrical schematics, layouts, and parts datasheets.
- Specialist in at least two of the following electrical disciplines:
- Power: Thorough experience with PWM-based DC/DC (<50W), EMI filter design, protection circuits, custom magnetics, and stabilizing power supplies.
- Digital PCB design: Thorough experience with peripherals and interface protocols (I2C, SPI, UART, CAN, ADCs, watchdogs, RS-422, LVDS), signal integrity, controlled-impedance PCB layout, FPGA design (VHDL, Verilog, IP Cores)
- Embedded software: Thorough experience with embedded development (C, Rust), embedded systems test equipment operation and automation (Python), writing regression test suites, software version control, and CM practices using svn and/or git.
- Analog PCB design: Thorough experience with signal conditioning (temperature, detectors), filters, operational-amplifier-based design, selecting and interfacing with data converters (A/D, D/A), differential signaling, basic power distribution circuits, discrete design, low-noise PCB layout.
- Electrical systems: Experience developing and architecting electronics at all levels (PCB, box, system), grounding, shielding, and cabling design, an ability to plan, communicate, analyze, and report at a systems level. Can develop a basic schedule for the implementation of a design.
Education/Training:
- Advanced degree in related area and/or equivalent experience/training.
- Post-graduate level coursework in a related area and/or equivalent experience/training required.
Preferred Qualifications
- Advanced debugging skills with embedded systems. Must be able to efficiently locate and resolve embedded hardware and software issues.
- Thorough skills in the design, development, and construction of high-reliability systems, including one successful product.
- Aerospace experience is preferred but the non-aerospace experience will be considered.
- Knowledge of high-reliability and/or safety-critical design practices for embedded systems
- Experience with environmental testing; e.g. thermal, vibration, vacuum, and EMI.
- Ability to analyze and design discrete (i.e. transistor-level) circuits.
- PCB layout experience using PADS VX or similar tools.
- Low-level (<1mV) analog signal conditioning.
- Thorough skills in supervising professional engineering and technical staff to ensure objectives are met in adherence to quality standards.
- Thorough systems knowledge of non-electrical engineering specialties necessary to successfully integrate and test an embedded system with both scientific instruments and a spacecraft bus.
- Ability to select, quote, and procure high-reliability parts with detailed specifications in accordance with NASA standards.

Under California law, the University of California, Berkeley is required to provide a reasonable estimate of the compensation range for this role and should not offer a salary outside of the range posted in this job announcement. This range takes into account the wide range of factors that are considered in making compensation decisions including but not limited to experience, skills, knowledge, abilities, education, licensure and certifications, analysis of internal equity, and other business and organizational needs. It is not typical for an individual to be offered a salary at or near the top of the range for a position. Salary offers are determined based on final candidate qualifications and experience.
The budgeted salary or hourly range that the University reasonably expects to pay for this position is $101,300.00 - $192,300.00.
- This is a 100% full-time (40 hours per week), career position that is eligible for full UC benefits.
- This position is exempt and paid monthly.
