Position overview
Position title: Neolux Yeh Lab Research Assistant (Junior Specialist)
Salary range: The posted UCSC salary scales set the minimum pay determined by by rank and step at appointment. See Table Represented Specialist Series Fiscal Year. 'Off-scale salaries', i.e., a salary that is higher than the published system-wide salary at the designated rank and step is offered when necessary to meet competitive conditions. A reasonable estimate for this position is $49,000 - $52,200.
Percent time: Full-time (100%)
Anticipated start: July 1, 2023. The degree must be completed by June 15, 2023 for employment beginning on July 1, 2023 and beyond.
Position duration: Initial appointment will be for one year, with the possibility of reappointment. Should the hiring unit propose reappointment; a review to assess performance will be conducted. Reappointment is also contingent upon the availability of funding.

Position Description
The Department of Biomolecular Engineering at the University of California, Santa Cruz (UCSC) invites applications for the position Neolux Yeh Lab Research Assistant. The Neolux Yeh Lab is devoted to the design and development of novel protein probes and biosensors for biomedical applications, including but not limited to clinical diagnostics, drug screening, functional imaging, and cell therapy studies.
Under the direction and supervision of Dr. Andy Yeh, the research assistant will be responsible for laboratory organization/management, the day-to-day operations of the research lab, and assisting with the preparation and carrying out in vitro experiments.
This position is currently supported for one to three years and may be extended contingent on project funding availability.
A flexible schedule within the 40-hour work per week can be arranged. Co-authorship on peer-reviewed publications and co-inventorship on intellectual properties are available contingent on the degree of project participation and contribution.
Responsibilities:
- Perform general laboratory maintenance (access control, organization, cleaning).
- Order supplies & equipment.
- Maintain records of chemical and supplies orders, deliveries, and storage locations.
- Independently prepare experimental supplies (buffer, aliquots, and competent cells).
- Clone genes by PCR and construct plasmids as instructed (training will be provided).
- Recombinant protein expression and purification (training will be provided).
- Operate scientific instruments with training and/or supervision (e.g., centrifuge, sonication, SDS-PAGE, and size-exclusion chromatography).
- Other duties as assigned.
The position will require the research assistant to consistently demonstrate strong organizational skills; strong writing and verbal communication skills; ability to keep detailed notes of experiments; willingness to learn new techniques ; ability to work successfully with members of a scientific team; and actively engage in translational research or diagnostic development.
Preference will be given to candidates who have extensive experience with the following areas: molecular cloning, recombinant protein expression/purification, performing protein assays, and organic chemistry.

Qualifications
Basic qualifications (required at time of application)
- B.A./B.S. degree (or equivalent foreign degree) in engineering, biological sciences, or a related field. It is anticipated that the degree will be completed by June 15, 2023.
- Research experience in biochemistry, biotechnology, molecular biology, chemistry, or immunology.
- Familiarity with general office software (e.g., MS Office), retrieving scientific literature (e.g., PubMed, Web of Science).
